For 30 years, Steve Lovett was a mainstay of Dallas theater, not only as an actor, but as a playwright, with several gay romantic comedies among his most acclaimed. His last play, Hopelessly Puccini, debuted at WaterTower’s Out of the Loop Fringe Festival in March to generally good reviews. A few weeks later, Lovett discovered he was in need of cardiac bypass surgery. He never recovered, passing away on June 11.
As a tribute to Lovett, the Dallas Public Library and its GLBT Adult Programming Committee presents a staged reading of Hopelessly Puccini at the downtown branch’s first floor auditorium on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The cast includes actors from the WaterTower production, including Ted Wold and Heath Billups (pictured), and is directed by Lovett’s friend, LisaAnne Haram.
Admission is free and will be followed by a talk-back reflecting on Lovett and the play.
