Transgender advocate and writer Ashley Love issues a scathing indictment of Dallas filmmaker Israel Luna’s “Ticked Off Tra**ies With Knives” in a piece published by The Huffington Post yesterday. As Arnold Wayne Jones noted below, the film opened Friday night at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Also, The Advocate has a story about Luna’s decision to blur out some of the letters in the controversial title, a decision that was arrived at with input from “Milk” screenwriter Dustin Lance Black. And OUT has a review of the film from activist and author Kate Bornstein.
Ashley Love’s Synopsis of TO*WK would only seem ‘scathing’ to attention craving media types and misogynistic paternalistic gay men with an agenda.
Ashley Loves Synopsis in time will prove to be truthful to the uninformed. Ashley Love’s Synopsis is accurate and enlightening to all people of good will.
Kelli:
Obviously calling it “a scathing indictment” doesn’t mean that I agree or disagree with it. It’s an objective statement. I understand you’re upset about the film, but maybe you should think about what you’re saying on here before you post it.
John, In case you missed it sent you a email asking that I be interviewed by you regarding “Ticked Off Trannies With Knives’.
It would be the first time that I would be allowed to present this issue from a local non gay transgender point of view.
I have not yet received a reply.
Kelli:
I apologize for not yet responding to your e-mail. I’m not at all opposed to publishing the opinions of those who oppose the film. In fact, that’s part of the reason why I linked to Ashley Love’s column in the first place. My hope is that the LGBT community can still have a meaningful dialogue about this issue. But that hope dwindles when I get accused of being “misogynistic” and “paternalistic” for merely trying to keep our readers updated, especially when I’m doing so by linking to a story that supports your view.
One of the many problems with Kelli, she is so used to seeing everything as negative, she cant even realize that someone agrees with or sides with her, or supports her thoughts. She is in it for the fight not to find a sollution for the cause. Hold on, youll be accused of just being a white man with priviledge aka lifes not fair, the trans womans race card. And Ashleys “synopsis” was nothing more then the same statements she makes, very cut and paste. She wrote an essay about Trans issues and loosly threw in TOTWK as a “reffrence” when she has been under specualtion for not havingseen the movie she so greatly detests.
John,
I did over react to you calling Ashley’s synopsis a ‘Scathing review’ and I apologize for going over the top on that. However I do feel that your indictment incorrectly conveys the message that her centralist moderate observations were actually outside of the culturally expected norm.
There have been no articles to this point that offer transgender peoples view on the word “Tranny” or TO*WK.
The Dallas Voice bills its self as a news source for the LGB and T community.
I would like to be interviewed by the Dallas Voice so I may present a opinion of TO*WK from the perspective of a transgender person who has a view of TO*WK that is different than the gay communities.
Interview Busey!
There are readers that would appreciate equal coverage on this topic rather than the scantly clad porn actors that the Voice has in nearly every issue.
