The Texas Siamese Rescue is facing possible closure if it doesn’t raise enough to pay off its former owner’s debt, leaving dozens of cats without homes.
Tami Manning and Alisa Lee took over the rescue in Corinth last year when its founder died. But the rescue had a debt of $244,000, of which all but $40,000 was waived if the couple could raise the funds by the end of the year. The task seemed daunting, but the pair didn’t want the rescue’s 179 cats to be euthanized.
Since taking over, Lee and Manning have reduced the number of cats at the rescue by donations and foster homes.
Lee said the rescue has paid back $10,000 so far. A donor has agreed to match up to $5,000 in donations. So far, $3,500 has been matched in the challenge.
The deadline is Dec. 31, but Lee said if the rescue can’t raise the funds, she hopes the owner of the property will work with them.
“We are doing all we can and I know that God will take care of us,” Lee said. “We are doing all that we can to make this work.”
If the funds aren’t raised and the rescue is forced to close, Lee said she and Manning will find homes for the cats as quickly as possible, but she hopes it doesn’t come to that.
“I don’t think closing is an option. We will just need to regroup in order to save these lives,” she said. “We have our volunteers and many have picked a handful to adopt if there is no other option and we will adopt everyone out as fast as possible. We will not leave anyone behind if we ever have to close these doors.”
