The San Francisco Bay Times is reporting that Phyllis Lyon (right), a pioneering gay rights activist who, with her late partner Del Martin signed on to an important civil rights law suit in California and were issued a marriage license in San Francisco by then-mayor (now governor) Gavin Newsome, has died. She was 95.

The news was announced by activist Kate Kendell, a Lyon protege, who said the icon died of natural causes. She was born in Oklahoma in 1924.
