Councilman Scott Sherman

In the process of covering the murder of Joshua Wilkerson, we discovered that Pearland, Texas — the fast-growing Houston suburb where Wilkerson lived — has an openly gay city councilmember.
His name is Scott Sherman, and he’s actually the mayor pro tem. We spoke to Sherman briefly about the murder on Friday. He didn’t have many additional details to share but wanted to pass on the news that authorities don’t believe Wilkerson was gay.
“Any time you have an 18-year-old who’s murdered in your city, it hits you in the gut and you’re nauseated by it,” Sherman said. “At the end of the day, it’s an 18-year-old boy who didn’t have to die.”
According ot the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, Sherman is one of only five out gay city councilmembers in Texas. The others are Sue Lovell of Houston, Joel Burns of Fort Worth, Randi Shade of Austin and Jerry Hazelip of Kemp.
Texas also has two openly gay mayors, Annise Parker of Houston and Matt Ganssle of Kemp.
