Micki Garrison, who’s over Resource Center Dallas’ food pantry for people with HIV/AIDS, said she could use a few extra volunteers between now and Thursday, which is the pantry’s busiest time of year. Garrison said about 400 clients visited the pantry Monday, up from about 125 on a typical day.
“That’s a lot of service to try and provide,” Garrison said this afternoon, noting that each client gets a week’s worth of food. “We’re doing OK, but if we could get another four or five people a day down here helping out, it would do a lot to get us through the next few days.”
Garrison said volunteers are needed during the pantry’s hours of operation through Christmas Eve. The pantry will be open until 5 p.m. today, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.
Those who wish to volunteer can expect to stock shelves, help clients get their groceries packed and to their vehicles, check clients in and out, and help clients get through the store, Garrison said. Ordinarily volunteers must complete a training course, but that requirement will be waived.
She added that the facility was prepared for the high demand and has enough food, thanks in part to the community’s generosity in recent weeks. However, food donations are always accepted.
