The image above may look like a scene right out of Brokeback Mountain, but it’s not. It’s from Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s new anti-gay ad that’s airing in Iowa.
“I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m a Christian, but you don’t need to be in the pew every Sunday to know there’s something wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas or pray in school,” Perry says in the ad. “As President, I’ll end Obama’s war on religion. And I’ll fight against liberal attacks on our religious heritage. Faith made America strong. It can make her strong again.”
Watch it below.
UPDATE: For a second consecutive day, the Human Rights Campaign issued a statement responding to Perry’s anti-gay tactics:
“Rick Perry is continuing to misrepresent the views of the hundreds of thousands of people of faith in this country who live openly or advocate as allies for the LGBT members of their community,” said Dr. Sharon Groves, Director of HRC’s Religion & Faith program. “We cannot be in the business of forcing people to choose between who they are, who they love, and their faith. Rick Perry’s rhetoric presumes that you can’t be Christian and supportive of LGBT people. Yet many Christians see in Jesus’ example a call to love and support their LGBT neighbors. Rick Perry is trying to claim religion for political motives but it won’t work. Our faith is too precious to be used as a cynical tool for political ends.”
Wow, Rick is really thinking being an anti-gay hater is somehow gonna win him the nomination. lol
This is so disgusting. Especially in Iowa, where gay marriage is legal. What a fucking moron Rick Perry is. How are “our children” PREVENTED from “celebrating Christmas”?! And you know why there’s no prayer in (PUBLIC) schools? BECAUSE THE FIRST AMENDMENT SAYS SO!!!! If there’s an attack on religion in this country, it’s from fucktards like Perry demogoguing and making victims of the most powerful lobby in America, the religious right, and pretending they need “special rights.” I’m furious. Plus, Perry’s totally gay himself.
Agreed Arnold. Conservatives like Perry twist the Constitution and the Bible to fit their needs of the moment. This is really a serious problem, with religious zealots controlling the conversation and our country’s avoidance of serious Science and Math. Where does Perry think all the economic recovery is going to come from? Faith? While we endure this clown show companies in India and China are working around the clock to develop new technologies to power their economies into the future….while we fight with one another over the fact that every LGBT person is born with their full rights under the law only to have them revoked when they fall in love.
arent there bigger issues? like poverty? terrorism? national debt?
It more like I’m Rick Perry a douche-bag and I approve this message. Such an Idiot!!! Someone please tell him “he will not be president..period.
Tell me again how this thinking is different from the disgusting religious regimes in the middle east?

Boy-He’s going to chase all those bad gays out and make sure the good Christians run this country-YUCK!Religious Hypocracy is the reason I can’t even step back into My church again, unless it’s with my beloved auntie-WHO is questioning all the hate and ugliness herself at 84.One positive thing to come from this is that I’ve ramped up my tolerance teachings to My Grandchildren, and as a result of all this,MY views on organized religion have changed.I was never cut out to be a Republican, but Perry and the whole lot of “front runners” are disgusting and bigots. And meanwhile kids are going hungry in the good old US and they want to focus on law abiding citizens and persecute them.Well,w/all that religious dogma training, they sure have enough history to do it.I’ll be over here with My Gay friends and family…
Hey…. uh… Did he see the news that another “anti-gay lover of God and faithful servant of christ”, got caught paying an 18 year old boy to let him suck his d*ck? …… Reckon somebody should tell him that we get it; Openly gay bashing means you spend a lot of time at the gloryhole? Well someone should say something LOL – Those Christ Whisperers are adorable with their Christianity and beliefs that are the exact opposite of Christ’s teachings! Hahahahahahahahaha
I’m tired of people giving Christians a bad name…
I was just reading Robert Schlein’s FB and am worried. He is on a Obama/Nazi spiel. Is he hoping to get a gig on our local Fox affilitate or hoping for a date with Robert Jeffress?
This is so fucking stupid. Fuck you Rick. You need a dick in the ass and know how I feel when it comes to my sexuality. Your dumb and won’t win.

Criticizing gays not losing their jobs in the military for being openly gay is going to win him the presidency? No one is being stopped from celebrating Christmas and anyone can pray in school if they want to. The teachers just can’t force you to pray. This guy is a world class moron.
Really Rick… Really… Hmmm… I wonder, how much time Rick served in our military? I served twenty years. I am also gay. Can anybody explain to me why is it, exactly, that we should prevent anyone who wants to serve their country from doing so just because of their sexuality? Rick, go back to praying for rain you frigging moron. Or better yet, go bury your head in N*****head Ranch; the name alone speaks volumes about who you really are.
.
One thing he might accomplish is by putting out such ads is to energize the opposition’s base which will turn out in greater numbers. This may take the focus more off fiscal considerations and more to social, which may end up being a toss of the dice for his party to it’s detriment.
And I thought NO ONE could be dumber than Baby Bush but Prick Dingleberry..uh..Rick Perry makes Bush look like MOther Theresa and Albert Einstein combined!! What a vile, micro-minded hate and ignodrance filled colostomy bag he is!!!
….
Too Funny!

What does gays serving in the military have to do with prayer in schools or your faith, Gov. Perry? Shamelessly pandering to voters of faith by conflating two unrelated issues is not a recipe for success. Governor Perry’s attack on service men and women regardless of their sexual orientation is unprecedented. Mr. Perry has stated that he would re-instate “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” even though a survey conducted & released by the Pentagon shows that 70% of service members have positive or no problem with the no repealed policy. Stonewall Democrats of Dallas honors and is thankful for our service men and women and their sacrifices for our freedoms.
Stonewall Democrats of Dallas condemns this opportunistic ad released by the Rick Perry campaign.
Sadly, Mr. Perry has decided to release this LGB attacking ad a day after President Obama issued a memorandum to federal agencies to address LGBT inequality abroad. The Memo directs all federal government agencies to “promote and protect the human rights of LGBT persons” and establishes a working group to monitor the progress of the initiative.
In addition, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton delivered a speech at the US Mission to the UN in Geneva to commemorate the signing of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and devoted most of speech to discussing this new measure. This is the first strategy put forth by any US administration to combat discrimination toward LGBT people outside the United States.
President Obama’s dedication to LGBT equality within the United States has had a major impact on the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. No other president has expressed the kind of deep commitment to improving the lives of LGBT people and certainly no other president has attempted to project such a promise around the world.
Stonewall Democrats of Dallas applauds President Obama and Secretary Clinton for their stead fast leadership on these issues, as well as all of our service men and women.

Where this country is headed is scary. These attacks on gays and lesbians are invidious and extremely dangerous. Haters abound. And likethe person said above, these issues Perry talks about have no connection. And there is no war on Christmas – that’s right-wing propaganda and ultra-fundamentalist Christian bullying.
Texas elected this idiot Governor? Wow, there are really some backwards, morons voting in Texas. He has to be one of the worst policians to come out of the Lone Star State, even beating Dubya in the lacking brains department!
I am a Christian. Rick Perry is an ass. See the difference?
In response to the backward morons in Texas voting response-As a Texan who voted for Perry, I think you are the moron. You are basing the whole perception on a video. First, under Perry, Texas has had one of the fastest growing economies the past 2 years and under him, came out of a recession. 94 percent of the total jobs shed by employers during Texas’ shorter recession have already been recovered as our economy has rebounded more quickly than the U.S. as a whole. Obviously, Perry is not as dumb as you think. As a voter, you need to pay attention to what your politicians are about and research what they have accomplished, and not from liberal networks only. The only morons here are those who formulate their own opinion on someone from what yahoonews or msnbc tells them too. With our economic growth and low cost to buy and build homes, Texas voters got this vote right. In response to his video, Perry states exactly how he feels. With him, you know what you get without surprises later on. I may not agree with someof his statements, but I do agree children should be able to celebrate Christmas in schools. Maybe its the Texan in me. I do not see how people can be offended when others celebrate their holiday. America is a place where we celebrate diversity and differences in culture rather than prevent it.
I believe it is a sin to have sexual relations with anyone other than your spouse (of the opposite sex). I also believe that prayer in school should be reinstated and encouraged.
I’m not for him but what he’s saying – followers – is, that ”being gay” is aberrated. (But now then, when you psych based “education” lately, that was slipped in 1963, “everything is ok now,” you see! “There’s no right there’s no wrong!” This understand comes from the same people who have convinced us (well at least you) that “if you feel depressed” or do just about anything these days….”its a disorder and we have just the pill for it.” This is the foundation, the “mentality” of current day – “I”m not responsible” – society! No guts or a complete inability to take a stand. (Following – that they can do.
Being tolerant is one thing, an inability to confront evil is quite another, and gay’s are covert. People can’t percieve let along acknowledge it! (And that’s even if some of you even know what I’m talking about!)
On the subject of religion, If you study the history of the Founding of The United States of America, you’ll see throughout this history that it was built upon religion, Christianity quite frankly, and a firm belief in God! Now we have to be carefull where we pray, say, or even if we can! (If you must know, no, I don’t particularly subscribe to the “one God theory” anyway ….but I’ll take it over homosexuality anyday! And I don’t think – I know – that we’re all spiritual beings, timeless and endless. Gays are simply in the wrong body this time around. Poor souls, but sill doesn’t give them the right to impose their problem, aberration upon others, especially our young / your children! By the way, on another yet related subject ….what do you think of Jerry Sandusky?
.
The hate speach im hearing is from those bashing Rick Perry If you don’t agree with him…don’t vote for him. But he has a right to say this…
…and what’s worse is that at the end he says “he apporves this message”!!!!!!!
smfh… this is the first time I have seen the ad..and frankly after watching it..can honestly say I am ashamed to have the prick as my governor…not that I voted for him mind you…but still just want to say..his views do not necessarily reflect those of all Texans..
Hm, was this the guy who prayed for rain and never got it?
I guess his Faith is strong, but it may be just way too hypocrite 🙂
In case anyone wants to know – or cares – its raining in Texas.
Darn! I was hoping Mr. Scary Guy would get the Republican nomination, setting up the biggest Democratic landslide since FDR. Seriously: a whole STATE voted for this guy??? Wow, glad I don’t live there and have the embarrassment of having this freaky dude representing me…
I am Atheist. It is who I am. I do not believe in a mystical explanation of the origins of our universe. I have had to endure for most of my life strong outward condemnation of my beliefs. I have lost employment, social standing, personal relations, etc. However one of the strongest tenets of what I believe in is not to convert people to Atheism. You come to Atheism from your own free will and from your own personal experiences. Therefore religious freedom is very important to people like me. I just don’t believe the religious right would protect my freedom to express a non-belief as I would protect theirs – because without freedom of religion no one would dare explore Atheism. It would seem our founders held the same belief.
To Stevesteve:
You must really like using parentheses, but dude, you need to close them up every once in a while. And I’m sorry to say that your punctuation errors are the only interesting content in your rant.
Allow me to trump Governor Perry’s conservatism with someone who has a whole chapter written in our American History about conservatism.
“I am a conservative Republican, but I believe in democracy and the separation of church and state. The conservative movement is founded on the simple tenet that people have the right to live life as they please as long as they don’t hurt anyone else in the process.”
“The religious factions will go on imposing their will on others,”
“I don’t have any respect for the Religious Right.”
“Every good Christian should line up and kick Jerry Falwell’s ass.”
“A woman has a right to an abortion.”
“You don’t need to be straight to shoot straight”
Barry Morris Goldwater – 1964 Republican Candidate for President
God bless Rick Perry for telling the truth. We believers have had the gay issue crammed down our throats and they need to realize many of us don’t like it. It is an abnormality. Unnatural humanity. Does that mean straight folk should hate gays? Of course not, but we shouldn’t be asked to lie and say it’s okay any more than gays should have to lie and say they’re straight.
I’m not in favor if Rick Perry. I’m for Ron Paul. However looking at the comments made on here I wonder why so many are “stupid” about what the Bible says. I took Biblical Greek, and believe me it is anti-homosexual acts of depravity. Liberals twist what the Bible says to try and make it appear God puts His stamp of approval on it, He don’t. Someone states that the first amendment says there will be no prayer in schools, wrong! Read it for yourselves instead of believing what others say. How are the schools stopping the celebration of Christmas? Read the news it’s all over it. Christmas: Origin:
before 1150; Middle English cristmasse; Old English Cristes mǣsse Mass of Christ is the celebration of the birth of Christ Jesus. Yet in the schools all over the country students are told to use the phrase “Happy Holidays” and not “Merry Christmas. Celebrations cannot depict the birth or mention of Christ yet Jewish and Muslim Holiday celebrations are OK in the schools, as well as witchcraft and any other religion but Christianity. Check the facts before speaking.
Well, Ricky
you even screwed up our chanch to get rid of you by sending you to Washington, … Dang,Son
To our friends who are ‘true believers’ or anti-gay, a question.
How, then, do you explain the continued existence of LGBT people? Logically, homosexual relationships are barren of offspring (yes, I know, some couples do have surrogates or artificial insemination performed, but apparently that isn’t the majority) – therefore if it’s “environment”, it should be a decreasing percentage of the population. The other answer is that it’s hereditary in some fashion, even from straight parents. That would mean that God has created it, as the Author of all that exists. You want to believe it’s abnormal, that’s your right, go ahead. This is still an America where you can believe what you want. Just ensure you give that right to others as well.
Even, as Ricky does, “However looking at the comments made on here I wonder why so many are “stupid” about what the Bible says. I took Biblical Greek, and believe me it is anti-homosexual acts of depravity.”
And by the way, it’s the pagan holy day of Yule that was initially subverted by the early Church (a common practice, used to help convert the masses back in the day) that eventually became Christmas. “Read it for yourselves instead of believing what others say. How are the schools stopping the celebration of Christmas? Read the news it’s all over it.” “Check the facts before speaking.”
The reason that the schools HAVE to use non-sectarian phrases is BECAUSE of the First Amendment.
There is no restriction on the student, just the governmental agencies that they’re in…they cannot impose religious beliefs on students. As for “Celebrations cannot depict the birth or mention of Christ yet Jewish and Muslim Holiday celebrations are OK in the schools, as well as witchcraft and any other religion but Christianity.”, that’s crap. Plenty of Midwest and southern schools have done it, because no one on their district will raise a fuss. What everyone needs to do is take a deep breath and just agree that not everyone is going to agree with their beliefs.
As for Rick Perry, he has the right to believe what he does, and even the right to put out ads like this. I’m equally of the right to think he’s full of crap, a hypocrite, a bigot and that there’s no way in hell he’s ever going to win the Republican candidacy. No rancor, no hate, just his beliefs and mine that will never see eye to eye.
