This is embarrassing to watch, but it’s no wonder Gov. Rick Perry refuses to debate Democrat Bill White and declined to interview with newspaper editorial boards this year.
Asked by The Texas Tribune’s Evan Smith on Friday to defend the state’s abstinence-only education policy, given that we have the third-highest teen pregnancy rate in the nation, Perry was at a total loss.
“Abstinence works,” Perry responds, to laughter from the audience. “Abstinence works. Maybe it’s the way it’s being taught or the way it’s being applied out there, but the fact of the matter is it is the best form to teach our children.”
Smith then asks whether Perry can give a statistic suggesting that abstinence-only education works.
“I’m just going to tell you, I’m going to tell you from my own personal life, abstinence works,” Perry says, to another round of laughter. “And the point is, if we’re not teaching it and if we’re not impressing it upon them, then no. But if the point is we’re going to go stand up here and say, ‘Listen, y’all go have sex and go have whatever is going on, and we’ll worry with that, and here’s the ways to have safe sex,’ I’m sorry, call me old fashioned if you want, but that is not what I”m going to stand up in front of the people of Texas and say …”
We’re not calling you old fashioned, governor, we’re calling you a freakin’ moron. And we can’t wait to see the rest of the Tribune’s interview on Monday.
The man is a total idiot! He would be an embarrassment to Texans if so many Texans weren’t as “kicked in the head” stupid as he is. Gawd, sometimes I am proud to be a Texan and other times I am ashamed. This is one of those times.
So he knows from his own, personal life that abstinence works, which means he doesn’t have sex?
I got the black humor of Perry’s comments, John, but it was your tagline that made me laugh out loud.
More LOLs, please.
It works… ahhhh What was the question…Oh my if he was any dumber his heart would stop.
This just proves that no one is more dishonest than a career politician. I rather imagine your close friends from A&M, your associates from your Bible book-selling days and even your wife Anita are laughing their asses off after hearing this one. I love it. Saturday NIght Live should do a skit on this one.
Whatever! ….The kids will do as the parents have raised them. The Governor isn’t responsible for the poor parenting / poor morals of thusly raised kids. To suggest that educational based expenditures are somehow responsible for a biasedly skewed statistic is in itself moronic. The interviewer couldn’t provide a statistic indicating what the percentage of teenage pregnancies would have been, had abstinence not been advocated. It’s all cause and effect anyway. There is absolutely no possibility of teenage pregnancy if they abstain,,,so yes they need to be educated about cause and effect (and yes, consequences) since the parents don’t or can’t.
watch ‘texas teenage virgins” a documentary about abstinence only and the havoc it has wreaked in one town alone – lubbock. holding a bible between one’s knees for birth control didn’t really work for bristol palin and now, now she’s a teenage abstinence activist……….
I have been looking all over the internet for the documentary Texas Teenage Virgins. I saw it years ago and can’t find it anywhere.
