The Vatican denounced the forthcoming UN declaration that condemns discrimination based on homosexuality. The church is worried that nations that don’t recognize same-sex marriage would be pressured to do so.
The proposed UN declaration, to be adopted on Dec . 10 by the UN general assembly, called for an end to the practice of punishing people for their sexual orientation. The declaration was aimed at countries where homosexuality can be punished by death, such as Iran and Saudi Arabia.
The response to the Vatican’s announcement has been widely condemned. An editorial in Italy’s La Stampa newspaper called the Vatican’s reasoning “grotesque.”
Queer Liberaction is holding a demonstration to address this issue on Wednesday, Dec 10, International Human Rights Day. The event will be at 5:30 at the Cathedral of Guadalupe which is located at 2215 Ross in Downtown Dallas. E-mail Queer Liberaction at lgbtliberaction@gmail.com for more info
In response to the Vatican’s opposition to a proposed U.N. declaration calling for an end to discrimination against homosexuals, Dignity/Dallas leaders have announced their support of the French-sponsored proposal, which has the backing of all 27 European Union countries.
This proposal is long overdue. It calls for an end to the practice of criminalizing and punishing people for their sexual orientation, which is something the Vatican has long favored.
The Catholic Church says that it supports fundamental human rights and opposes every form of “unjust discrimination†which includes “not just the death penalty, but all violent or discriminatory criminal laws against homosexuals.†The problem with the proposal, according to the Vatican, is that it not only calls for the decriminalization of homosexuality, but also could discriminate against communities that uphold traditional marriage.
Citing same-sex marriage as a reason for opposing the declaration is just an excuse to distract
people from the real intent of the proposal, which is to end discrimination against gays. It’s really disappointing that the Vatican would make such a big deal over a rather innocuous declaration.
If you are a Catholic, or simply a friend of the Catholic Church, Dignity/Dallas leaders urge you to protest the Vatican’s position the demonstration at 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 10 at Cathedral Guadalupe, 2215 Ross Ave. in Dallas.
