Ya know, I have long been a fan of the music of Prince. I can remember back to my reckless youth, dancing the night away at the old Village Station to “Dirty Minds.” And then there was “1999.” Every song on that album kept you singing and dancing.
I even went to the theater to see “Purple Rain.” It may not have been a great – or even a good – movie. But man, the music was fantastic. And it did have the lesbian character: Wendy, the guitar player.
And now, the New Yorker magazine has published an interview with Prince in which he – supposedly – says the Bible condemns homosexuality, Here’s a quote:
“When asked about his perspective on social issues—gay marriage, abortion—Prince tapped his Bible and said, ‘God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, Enough.'”
Now Perez Hilton has posted a blog on his Web site saying that the New Yorker reporter got it all wrong and grossly misquoted the singer, and Prince is mad about it.
So lots of people are talking about it. Lots of people are saying they will never buy or listen to his music again. I’m not sure what to think. I do know that reporters do sometimes misquote people. But I really find it hard to believe that someone would just make up a quote like that.
I can’t say I am going to “boycott” Prince and his music. That would imply I would quit listening to his music and quit buying it — and I already don’t do either of those things. I long ago lost my copies of “Dirty Minds” and “1999,” and none of his recent music has caught my attention enough to make me want to buy it. And you don’t hear it much on the radio, especially not on NPR, which is what I listen to all the time.
