She’s got a big mouth but an even bigger heart. She worked for Queen Elizabeth as a teenager and had a variety of other jobs before becoming Dallas Voice’s delivery manager years ago. In addition to making sure the newspaper is at your favorite pick-up location every Friday — through the heat of summer and the cold of winter — she also makes sure animals along her delivery route are fed and loved.
Over the years, Linda Depriter has rescued hundreds of dogs and cats. She has nursed sick animals to back health and then found them new homes. And the ones she couldn’t find homes for, she kept for herself, spoiling them each and every one with everything from special beds, toys and clothes to home-cooked chicken meals.
At any one time, Linda has a dozen or more cats and dogs living with her in her Lewisville home. Yes, Lewisville has a restriction on numbers of pets that can be kept in a home in a residential neighborhood, but any time someone reports her, the city’s response is, “Oh, that’s just Linda,” because they know she knows how to care for a houseful of pets safely, while controlling the noise.
And the smell? None. It is one of the cleanest houses you’ll ever see.
Linda’s made arrangements for veterinary care for all of her animals, and has helped others make sure their pets get the vet care they need. And she has deals for pet food, because she’s not just feeding her own pets — or as she calls them, her family — she is also feeding the stray cats she encounters along her route delivering Dallas Voice.
Linda loves each and every animal, whether the live in her home or on the streets, but it’s true, that she does show a little favoritism: If you meet her along her delivery route, you’re likely to see her with Josie, a fat chihuahua mix who’s also become the Dallas Voice mascot.
