The Human Rights Campaign is excited to launch its eleventh video for the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality campaign with the addition of attorney, author and activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Kennedy’s voice raises the profile of this timely fight for equal marriage rights in the Empire State. The new video can be viewed online at www.hrc.org/NY4marriage.
Discussing the right to marry, Kennedy compares the discrimination faced by same-sex couples to the Jim Crowe laws of the south. “This is the last vestige of institutionalized bigotry that’s left in this country, and we need to get rid of it.”
In this eleventh installment, Kennedy joins Mayor Bloomberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Fran Drescher, Moby, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe, actors Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, Julianne Moore, designer Kenneth Cole and Broadway star Daphne Rubin-Vega to support marriage equality in the state. HRC plans to continue joining with prominent New Yorkers speaking out in support for marriage equality. Many more voices are to come in the days ahead, including: David Chang, Tom Colicchio, Ethan and Ryan Hawke, Christopher Meloni and Joan Rivers.
A January 2011 Siena Research Institute Poll found 57% of New Yorkers support marriage equality. In another poll released today by Quinnipiac University, New Yorkers support marriage equality by the highest margin ever in that poll (56% to 37% opposed).
