Former Killeen Mayor Dan Corbin

Maybe it’s no longer news when a branch of Stonewall Democrats pops up in some of Texas’ smaller cities, like its newest affiliate serving Temple and Killeen that participated in the recent Fort Hood Pride.

And maybe it shouldn’t be surprising when members of Dallas Log Cabin Republicans and Metroplex Republicans tell us their treatment at the Texas Republican convention was completely opposite from the way they’re welcomed by the Dallas County party. After all, the Dallas County Republican Party has candidates like Log Cabin Vice President Lisa DeWitt, who is running for the 265th Judicial District Court, and Ron Natinsky, who is running for county judge. He had Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance backing in his bids for Dallas City Council and Dallas mayor.

But it is surprising when a Central Texas newspaper compares reparative therapy to the violent scenes of aversion therapy in A Clockwork Orange and a Republican former mayor in a city like Killeen denounces parts of the Texas Republican platform relating to the LGBT community.

Former Mayor Dan Corbin echoed a statement by Log Cabin Texas President Jeff Davis that the anti-gay planks came from a few people on the platform committee and never came to the floor for a vote.

“I know for certain there was not a single bit of discussion on this issue, and I’m not even sure it would have passed if it had been voted on by all the delegates,” Corbin told the Killeen Daily Herald. “I wish that politicians would spend more time on trying to solve our nation’s problems than concerning themselves with issues like this.”
