Find the perfect automotive partner by taking pride in the process of looking for it

Whether you want to find a fast date, a serious steady or a partner for life, there are apps for that. And, let’s be honest, many of us are good at using them. However, we may not be so good at finding the perfect automotive partner. There are apps for that, too, but you may also need some old-fashioned dating tips.
Swipe left, swipe right — and find a car sweeter than night.

Virgin or experienced
The sexy, low sports car may get your motor revving, but you’ll wear yourself out quickly if your heart prefers the quiet comfort of a luxury crossover. Be honest about your feelings and personal needs. If you really need a big bear for hauling kids, campers and sports gear, stay away from the smooth twink with a high-revving engine. But, if that’s what gets your passions boiling, enjoy the ride.

As with your next fling, it’s worth pondering whether you want a “virgin” or a vehicle that’s more “experienced.” An experienced — or pre-owned — auto will be less expensive to purchase and insure, but you’ll need to budget more for maintaining marital bliss. Virgin — or new — autos come with a higher initial sticker, but also a full warranty, the latest safety tech and likely years before ugly turmoil.
Take your favored one for a drive. Make sure you don’t hear any strange noises, that the wheels ride smooth and the brakes don’t vibrate. Pay attention to how the transmission shifts and whether there is any smoke. Smoking may be sexy outside a club, but it’s not becoming of an automobile.

Especially if trading coin with an individual, take the experienced ride to an ASE-certified mechanic for a full check-up.

Put in the time
Relationships don’t come easy; you must put in the time. Same is true if you want to find the perfect car. Tap into cars.com, KBB.com, car-data.com and Consumer Reports for informed reviews plus Used and New vehicle ratings. Also check out the Voice archive and GayWheels.com for my reviews. Edmunds.com has reviews, rankings and invoice prices. There are many sources with arrays of auto reviewers to help guide your decision.

Know the price of your marriage up-front. Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book and NADA offer new and used vehicle prices and specify whether you’re selling or buying. On Autotrader.com, you can see what people in your area are asking for similar vehicles.

You can also get an offer for your used vehicle from Carvana.com or CarMax, both of which will write a check right there if you choose.

Set a firm budget that’s no more than 10 percent of your take-home pay — preferably less. If you’re not in a position to pay cash for your new boy — or girl — toy, get pre-approved for financing from your bank, credit union or online lender. This causes you to be real about how much you can afford before the dealer starts trying to upsell everything, and it lends an opportunity to shop the best rates without interference from the dealership finance manager.

I’d also recommend calling your insurance agent to check rates there as well.

Seal the deal
When you find the partner you want, set up an appointment to be sure you have a proper date. Be clear that if the actual manifestation doesn’t match the photo, the night will end abruptly. Don’t let anybody play games and run back and forth to their “mother” to ask permission. If the sales manager must make the decision, suggest they get their ass out there and talk to you directly.

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness might offer a marriage of convenience

Don’t get twisted in a three-ring spectacle. Negotiate one point at a time. Get a fair deal on your new vehicle, used vehicle and financing rates. Each is negotiable and each is subject to being raised to obscure whether you’re getting a good deal.Leave games to the bedroom and stay focused. Skip add-ons like tire protection plans, paint protection, etc. They’re just ways to suck money out of your life.

Final Thought
Don’t let anybody talk you into a long-term relationship you don’t want. Nearly one-third of loans are longer than six years. Don’t commit to more than four years, or you’ll owe more than the car is worth and pay significantly more interest driving it.

Buy what you can afford and don’t spent one penny more. You may want the $60,000 luxury crossover, but there are plenty for half that price that will still have you driving proud.
Storm forward!
