The Associated Press is reporting that Portugal’s conservative President Anibal Cavaco Silva has said he will sign a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in that country, and some sources are saying the bill has been signed.
Silva’s signature brings to eight the number of countries that have legalized same-sex marriage, plus Mexico City, Washington, D.C. and five U.S. states (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa and Vermont).
According to AP, Silva said he was “setting aside personal convictions” to sign the bill into law, but that he knows if he vetoed it, it would go back to Parliament where lawmakers would vote to override the veto.
He said: “”Given that fact, I feel I should not contribute to a pointless extension of this debate, which would only serve to deepen the divisions between the Portuguese and divert the attention of politicians away from the grave problems affecting us.”
