Lines formed outside clerk’s offices this morning in New York City (below), where 823 couples are signed up to wed on the first day same-sex marriage is legal. In other parts of the state, some couples have already tied the knot. Lesbian activists Kitty Lambert and Cheryle Rudd of Buffalo (above) were married at the stroke of midnight at Niagara Falls, in front of the rainbow-lit falls (also shown below). Lambert and Rudd are grandmothers with 12 grandchildren between them. Midnight ceremonies were also held in Albany, Hudson and Long Island. Clerk’s offices in more than a dozen cities and towns across the state were set to open their offices today to accommodate same-sex couples. The anti-gay National Organization for Marriage and Westboro Baptist Church plan protests, and LGBT groups plan counterprotests.
