LATE BLOOMERS - Dinah (Connie Nelson) and Carly (Dee Hennigan) exchange vows - image by Bill MatlockTwenty years ago, sister Gretchen and Julia Dyer teamed up to make a movie in Dallas — Gretchen writing, Julia directing — about two middle-aged high school employees who fall in love and wanna tie the knot. It upset the apple-cart of the staid Texas community, as it empowered the women to be out-and-proud about their love.
That film, Late Bloomers, became a cult hit, especially with its cast of local stage and film actors (Connie Nelson, Joe Nemmers, Bruce DuBose) among the cast. Now in time for the 20th anniversary, a newly digitally-transfered version of the film will screen as part of the queer content featured at this year’s Dallas International Film Festival. The screening is at 7:30 p.m. at the Angelika, with Julia Dyer and several returning cast members in attendance. I’ll even be conducting the post-screening Q-and-A, so come loaded with questions and have me call on you!
