Missouri Republican senators have broken a 39-hour Democratic filibuster and passed a resolution allowing individuals and small businesses to deny service to LGBT people and others who violate “sincerely held religious beliefs.”
The First Amendment Defense Act passed 23-9 and now heads to the state House, where it is expected to pass as well. Gov. Jay Nixon, a Democrat, voiced opposition to the bill but has little control over its fate.
It will go before voters this fall.
