TWCD holding Masquerade event as Halloween weekend fundraiser
The Women’s Chorus of Dallas will host “Masquerade 2010” Saturday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines Blvd.
The annual fundraiser will feature a wide variety of silent auction items, casino tables, live jazz music, tarot card readings, ballroom dancing and a contest for the best masquerade costume.
Auction donations in the form of items or certificates for good or services are still being accepted and are tax-deductible.
Auction items already donated include original artwork, tickets for sports, theater and other entertainment events, spa packages, overnight hotel stays and travel packages, celebrity memorabilia, gift baskets and more.
The casino at the event will include poker, blackjack or roulette, and the best players can win prizes.

Interfaith Peace Chapel opens Nov. 7, kicks off ‘40 Days’ of celebration
After more than 10 years in the making, the Interfaith Peace Chape will officially open its doors on Sunday, Nov. 7. The opening will be followed by “40 Days and 40 Nights” of events in celebration.
The 40 days of events will include a variety of spiritual services, celebrations, artistic expressions and educational sessions.
Organizations in support of varying religious denominations, political viewpoints, human causes and ideologies will be the hosts of the programming, allowing a wide variety of ideas to be presented and open to the public.
Among the events planned are:
• “One Nation Working Together For Jobs & Justice” on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 3:30 p.m. Speakers will be Jeff Dumas, professor of economics at UT-Dallas and an expert on economic conversion and military economies, and Nancy Hall, legislative secretary of the Communication Workers of America Local 6215.
• Puppets for Peace on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 11 a.m. Professional puppeteers from all over North Texas along with members of the Lone Star Puppet Guild will perform short skits featuring virtually every kind of puppet from marionettes to shadow puppets on the theme of “Peace on our Planet.
• Zen Meditation Event on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. The Maria Kannon Zen Center is a non-profit corporation that offers a setting for people of various backgrounds and faith traditions to practice Zen.
• Film screening of Trouble the Water on Monday, Nov. 22, at 7 p.m. Directed by Fahrenheit 9/11 producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, Trouble the Water is an intimate portrait of a community abandoned long before Hurricane Katrina hit, and a redemptive tale of a couple surviving failed levees, bungling bureaucrats, and their own troubled past.
• Human Rights Day Event on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. A panel discussion on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with partners from the U.N., Amnesty International, Center for Survivors of Torture and allied organizations.
• Sam Harris in Concert on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. The Broadway star will perform his singular interpretation and inimitable style of an eclectic collection of Broadway and pop classics from Hammerstein to Sondheim and U2 to Lennon to Hendrix.
• Kabbalah Meditation on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 11 a.m. Kabbalah meditation, devised by the Jewish mystics more than 2,000 years ago to enhance the awareness and access higher planes of consciousness, aim to make its practitioners the true carriers of the light of God. Kabbalah meditation continues to flourish in the oral tradition and rises above the written word.
