Donna Dumae presents annual Friends Helping Friends benefit

Donna Dumae, HMIM Empress XXIII of the United Court of the Lone Star Empire, Inc. of Dallas, will hold her 11th annual “Friends Helping Friends” fundraising event on Sunday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. at Throckmorton Mining Co., 3014 Throckmorton Ave.

Proceeds will benefit AIDS Services of Dallas. Donations of toiletry items will also be accepted. Items needed at this time are: toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, lotion, mouthwash, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Late-night Victory Park shopping spree to benefit DIFFA/Dallas

Victory Park and DIFFA/Dallas are joining together to present a late night shopping spree from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6, with participating Victory Park retail stores donating 10 percent of all sales to DIFFA/Dallas.

The evening will include cocktails and live music throughout Victory Park.

Self-parking will be available in Lot C on North Houston Street across from Museum Way and in Lot M on Victory Avenue across from The Park.

Valiente, Business Network presenting Spanish-language housing seminar

Valiente DFW-LGBT Latino/a Alliance in collaboration with Cathedral Business Network will offer a two-hour educational seminar in Spanish for first-time homebuyers on Saturday, Sept, 8, from 10 a.m. to noon in the Cathedral of Hope Fellowship Hall.

Topics will include “Obtaining a Loan,” “The Buying Process, Title, Home Warranty, Insurance,” and “Foreclosure Prevention in Texas.” The seminar will end with a time for questions and answers.

Words of Women essay contest entries now being accepted

Words of Women, an international effort to chronicle important events in the lives of women and to tell the stories of influential women and ensure that history is recorded from women’s point of view, is accepting entries for the 2008 worldwide Words of Women Essay Event.

The 2008 essay cycle began on Women’s Equality Day, Aug. 26, and the entry deadline is Jan. 1.

Topics to choose from for this cycle are “The Most Influential Woman in My Life” and “The Most Significant Thing That Happened to Women This Year.”

Essays must be 500 words or less, typed, double-spaced and on one side of the paper only.

Entries plus a $5 registration fee must be mailed to Words of Women, Box 18077, Dallas, Texas 75218, or e-mailed to wordsofwomen@aol.com, with payment through PayPal at wordsofwomen.org.
