The people over at Stop Avatar Movie blog site are attempting to rally the LGBT community and allies to protest the Friday opening of James Cameron’s Avatar.
Um, you know, I’ll just let them explain after the jump.
On Friday, December 18, 2009 thousands of people will be protesting the release of the James Cameron movie, Avatar. The purpose of the protest is as follows:
1) To make all people aware that heterosexual arrogance, assumptions or exclusions of alternative sexualities in movies is no longer acceptable. Diversity and tolerance are human rights.
2) To speak out for all gay, bi-sexual, genderless and transgender people who are not represented by any character in Avatar.
3) To educate people about Evolution and humanity’s transition to transgenderism.
All protests will be peaceful and non-confrontational. Suggested methods of protest:
- Stand outside of theaters with signs and pamphlets to express your views
- Sit down in theater lobbies and do not move unless the police use force or violence upon you
- Stand up during a viewing of Avatar and remain standing
- Buy tickets to Avatar in bulk but do not attend showings. An empty theater sends a message
- Bring your mate to the theater and show affection to each other.
Reminder: SILENCE = DEATH. We will be silent no more.
It seems to me that our energy and time would be better spent protesting the bill before the Uganda Parliament that would make being gay a crime punishable by death.

Studios absolutely do not care what happens after you’ve bought the ticket. The only message you’re sending is “boy this sure is a popular movie!”

At a time when the world is watching us and VOTING on our very humanity, I would say that the time is ripe for LGTB citizens to grow up, stop this nonsense, and protest things that ACTUALLY matter in our lives. You know, like the fact that we can still be fired from our jobs and evicted from our homes in 30 states for being an LGTB citizen.
Protesting a silly movie that will be here & gone in but a blip is about the most UNFOCUSED protest I have ever heard of.

I agree. This is a ridiculous protest. To waste time and effort even trying to organize such a protest is almost criminal when LGBT people are fighting every day for their very lives, much less their jobs, their right to marry, etc.
Fortunately, the comments on the website are almost universally opposed to this line of thinking about movie making. We don’t need more idiots allegedly speaking for our community. There are too many already doing that.l

There are way more effective causes that these protesters should be fighting for because gays are not going to be in every friggen movie, they’re already in a little less than 50% of them. If a gay man was in every film just to make ppl happy, the plots and story lines would be shit because they’d have to come up with some bull excuse for having him in there when it’s not effective for the story.

I am a gay man and I have been with my partner for 9 years. For 9 years we’ve been fighting to be able to even get married. As an adolescent, I was exiled from my family because of my sexual orientation. When me and my partner were looking for houses, some salespeople wouldn’t even talk to us. I’ve been fired for being gay before. That a movie have no LGBT characters is NOT one of my biggest fucking worries right now. In fact, it is probably the subject I give the less of a fuck about. The whole idea seems like we are simply taking a giant leap backwards, we want acceptance, not a sort of barrier of difference between us. I pity the man, woman or transsexual who thinks this is a good way to be accepted. As a fighter for our rights for years, this kind of behavior makes me sick

Avatar is a wonderful movie and if you actually watch it and pay attention has very deep meaning.
So what if it doesn’t say if one of the Avatars are gay. That doesn’t mean that they didn’t have any running around in there, but so what. That was not what the movie was even about.

Seriously? I highly doubt that when James Cameron was writing this, he said ” you know what? I am going to discriminate against gay people in this movie.” He had no intention of sending a bad message to these people. He was just trying to make a goddamn movie.
did anyone at all consider that this is just a publicity stunt? what better way to get even more people interested in and talking about your movie than by having people protest it. Jjames cameron thought, “hmmmm, the $900 billion I’m going to make from this movie isn’t going to be enough, I need more money. Maybe some people who aren’t interested in seeing the movie are gay, so if they protest it by buying tickets, I’m making money off them that I wouldn’t have previously made and at the same time generating interest in my film for others.”

What is really amazing about this, is the basis of their “protest”, being there are no LGBT couples in this movie.
They only show one bloody couple in the movie. If they want LGBT couples in Avatar so bad, they should use their imagination, since there is no other clearly defined couplings.
Their proposed protests will not get their thoughts heard, but turn people against them, if for no other reason than spite. Every bloody TV show these days has to have a “token gay” couple at some point or another. They need to STFU and be happy with what you got!
