Dee Johnson of McKee, Ken., told the Lexington Herald-Press this week that her daughter, 18-year-old Cheyenne Williams, won’t be returning to classes at Jackson County High School because Johnson believes her daughter’s safety would be in jeopardy if she went back.
Williams, who has been out as a lesbian for several years, told police that on April 16, three of her classmates kidnapped her, forced her into a car and drove her out to a remote area where they beat her and tried to push her off a 50-foot cliff.
Authorities have arrested Corinne Schwab and Ashley Sams, both 18m and a 17-year-old girl — not named because she is a minor — in connection with the allegations.
The attack happened on the National Day of Silence, a coordinated national effort in which students took a vow of silence for one day to heighten attention and awareness of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools. Jackson County High officials said National Day of Silence did spark some controversy on their campus, with some students participating in the effort and others protesting against it by wearing stickers that said “gay is not the way.”
