I got word Monday night, Oct. 31, that John “Spanke” Studer had passed away, apparently of natural causes, at his home in Oak Lawn.

Studer was active in many organizations including Dallas Bears, and was perhaps most well-known for his twice-a-year toilet paper parties through which he gathered donations of toiletries and necessary items to donate to residents at AIDS Services of Dallas.

Watch for more complete obituary information in Friday’s paper. The photo is courtesy of Jesus Chairez.

  3. the kindest, most genuine man in Oak Lawn. So loved and so loving. Spanke was the most human of saints and the best example I can imagine of a good and decent way to live.

  4. 33 or so years ago I met a sweet and gentle soul from Kansas named John Studer, I have many fond memories, the very first TP party in a very small apartment , his Great Dane “Tiny”, his mad baking skills, but mostly his kindness. I will miss him dearly! Rest in Peace my sweet friend!

  5. 32 + years ago I met this woderful man, John Studer “Spanke”. I am in total shock for his loss. Rest in peace my friend.

  6. My prayers are with Spanke’s family. He will be greatly missed. Spanke’s laughter was infectious, his heart as wide as the oceans, and his culinary skills outstanding. A true friend and genuine person.

  7. Yet another Supernova has left the planet. Spanke, you have done so much for so many, and I have been overjoyed and honored to have you in my life for over 20 years. You will be missed forever, never forgotten, and you leave behind a legacy which will continue. We love you, one and all….

  8. The world is just a little dimmer, the sun just a little less bright. He has gone home to be with His God but his impression on Earth will live in all he encountered. You will be missed Spanke.

  9. A lifetime ago, I helped John and Willie pack up to move from Kansas, to Dallas. I followed along 6 months later. John helped me manage the struggles of REALLY leaving home, and growing into adulthood. The years, love, and miles separated us. Yet I’ve never forgotten, and am forever grateful for the early days.
Sleep well my big brother, until the entire Familie Klutz and friends meet again on the other side.
