Jasper Lightsey
Jasper Lightsey, who as “Miss Wanda” performed in shows at JR’s Bar & Grill for 22 years, has responded via Facebook video to a video of singer and reality show star Tamar Braxton, posted earlier today on Facebook, in which Braxton said she was turned away from the popular Cedar Springs nightclub because of the way she was dressed. Braxton said she was told she couldn’t enter the club because she was “dressed like a gangster,” and ended with the claim that JR’s has a “zero tolerance policy for black people.”
Lightsey, however, suggests Braxton could have handled the encounter better. Here’s his take :
Disgraceful video. Black folks are suppose to tip toe and only get decent treatment when they’re a celeb? You just want to cash more JR checks. Horrible video. Keep tapdancing.
Clearly we don’t discriminate. Rules are rules. No sunglasses. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with anything other than us bartenders needing to see eyes. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but in Texas, if you’re over served, have an accident, kill yourself, kill another, etc IT’S THE BARTENDERS FAULT!
I am a white male, I was told I had to remove sunglasses and more than one bar….I had been in an accident and face was pretty bruised, so I wanted to ware sunglasses, but when I went out with friends, every place we went, we were told, state law requires you to remove sunglasses.
It’s a gay bar, not a gangster bar or a strip club. Dress appropriately. It’s that simple.

She was mistreated, gay bar or not! And, althoughI do not know her personally, how was it determined that she looked like a gangster? How do we determine that these days??? Exactly! Probably profiling, and ee know how that works. Have a nice day!
How do we know she was even called a gangster? I’ve been there plenty of time and there are all kinds of different people who come in. They have a no sunglasses and no bag policy. She didn’t follow it so she’s mad. Nobody treated her wrong.

Miss Wanda was ugly then and still ugly. Looking like a monkey and still kissing JR’s butt for those little coins. Wake TFU. You speaking on the issue and you wasn’t there to witness the disrespect. You should get your teeth fixed before posting any video going forward. Thank you Tamar for exposing JR’s for what it is. Wanda is the only one who don’t have anything else to do but kiss white butts.

If the glasses were the issue security should have showed her the rules and ask her to remove them before entering the bar don’t fucking stereotype ppl !!!!
Jasper thank you for having the balls to tell the truth about this unfortunate “reality show moment” that has upset not only the black gay community but the whole community. JRs has never turned away any of my family or friends and with all the diversity among the clientele, it seems highly that this happened to this woman. I think the sunglasses may have clouded her vision as it did her truth.
Jasper or no one has the title to speak for the black or gay community. If you didn’t witness the incident, you don’t know the truth as well. What we all know is that she was turned away. The issue at hand is that she tried to enter JR’s and was turned away because she had on sunglasses and a bag. If they knew she was Tamar Braxton, they would have allowed her to enter the place. It shouldn’t be because of who she is, bottom line. It was a Monday night and I know there were not a lot of individuals in JRs. If security there is so tight, play back the video camera at the door. We could clearly get to the truth then. She doesn’t have a reason to lie about a bar and how they treated her. If the sunglasses were an issue, don’t serve her drinks. It’s probably not the owners but the need to do a better job in training their staff on how to address situations. This has caused is their business to lose money and given them a bad reputation.
I think it’s pretty unfortunate that we have to even have a debate over something as trivial as a reality tv star and her maybe/maybe not getting a hard time coming into a gay bar. It is the holiday season. People are homeless. Children are going without presents. We have a president who is systematically taking away anything of value in this country and auctioning it off like a fire sale at Sak’s. Unless you know Tamar personally – please don’t pretend like this alleged situation effects you. Take all that pent up reality tv energy you have and go volunteer somewhere. Make a difference. Fight a real travesty impacting our community instead of thinking that commenting about this woman and her manufactured beef makes you a civil rights activist. It really makes everyone look bad when this is what we are fixated on as a community. May this be a great holiday season for you all, and may all of you find a way to make it greater for someone else who can’t do it for themselves.
