…. But it’s a song about one girl enjoying a kiss with another, and it was apparently too much for the folks at Van High School.
Three twirlers at the school have been suspended from performing at one pep rally and two games after they performed a twirling routine to Katy Perry’s song “I Kissed a Girl (And I Liked It)” during a pep rally before a football game. They had been told not to use the song, but as senior Jordan Downey said, it was just a song, and they liked it.
But school administrators didn’t like it. So they girls were suspended. And now, according to NBC5i.com, the Web site for DFW’s Channel 5 news station, now other Van High School Band members have decided to wear buttons declaring “No Twirlers, No Band,” and members of the band’s drum line have said that they will not march as long as the twirlers are suspended.
Van, for those of you who don’t know, is in Van Zandt County, just east of Canton, about 15 miles or so, on Interstate 20. It is a tiny little town, barely a wide spot in the road, but picturesque and, in my experience, friendly. I worked there for about a year and a half in the mid 80s, as editor of the town’s newspaper, the Van Progress.
I was also in the band when I was in high school (not Van High School, though). I played the trumpet, and later, the tuba. I was never a twirler, but there were a few I would have gladly kissed back then. And I would probably have liked it.
Oh my God! It is 1988?! I got in trouble with the principal when I tried out for my cheerleading squad to the song “Push It” by Salt-N-Pepa! Apparently my gyrating pelvis was too much. Gotta love those small towns with school administrators with too much time on their hands. No Way, No How, No Twirlers, No Band!
It is truly up to today’s YOUNG PEOPLE to stand up against (some) of the older generation’s mis-informed, often just plain old ignorant ideas and views about gay people. While it wasn’t until I was in my 40’s to realize that being taxed by a discriminating government is immoral and unjust; luckily younger people are realizing this in their early 20’s. (Gay Tax Protest)
this song is way worse than war and 9/11, lol
Gotta get Footloose!!
Glad to see the young people of the town have more brains than the school administrators.
Maybe they should have changed the song to “kill the police” or “clit licker” by GG Allin.
Those admins have no idea how rough it can get. “I kissed a gurl”….. gimme a break…..”oh! it’s so risque and edgy”. Complete idiots. Some of the kids in that town need to show them what “obscene” and “anti social” really look like.
Good gravy! We’re in the middle of a deadly hurricane season, an unending string of illegal wars of occupation, an economic meltdown, and threats of yet another stolen election amid a Constitutional crisis… yet these school administrators and educators are getting their panties bunched up over band music? A song???
:roll eyes:
These kids will learn one lesson: to be powerful, you must stand united against injustice and tyranny and stupidity. If they can hold together, they just might succeed.
As for those so-called educators… stop fixating on crotches and concentrate upon brains.
Say, instead of NOT playing in the band, what say we show up for the gig and then play so badly with a few clarinets riffing the opening bars of the offending song from time to time.
OMG it was just a song. Our small town of Van, Texas needs to kick out all these old people out that don’t know anything about today’s youth. Gosh, if u want to see 2 girls kissing come to Van in the hall ways in the lunch room everywhere — so just suck it up Van ISD
Right, Mike. Or the band could show up and march in silence. The team could show up for the game, but not take the field. the crowd could attend, but not cheer. If enough people want this stupid suspension lifted, it will be lifted. It just has to make enough administrators look ridiculous and impotent.
