Country singer Ty Herndon, who came out as a gay man in November 2014, delivered a rousing a cappella rendition of “God Bless America” on Saturday night, April 28, at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
In a press release about the performance from Aristo PR, a spokesperson said that Herndon attended the event “with the intention of raising awareness for the ‘Beyond I Do’ campaign, which is working to bring attention to the discrimination [against] the LGBTQ community in the U.S.”
The statement continued, “This campaign is raising awareness of this discrimination by giving real Americans a platform to tell their stories of being fired from their jobs, evicted from their homes or denied basic services because of their sexual identity.”
