The Gay and Lesbian Fund for Dallas is becoming a membership organization. Former Mayor Laura Miller will be on hand for the kickoff event in September.

Until now, the organization’s money was raised through events, but the group is now soliciting memberships. A basic “Friend” annual membership fee is $50. For $200, the “Advocate” level also includes two invitations to an annual member appreciation event. The $500 “Philanthropic Partner” level also includes optional website recognition.

Former Mayor Miller will be the special guest at the membership event on Tuesday, Sept. 13 in the Fifth Floor Owners’ Lounge at The House at Victory Park, 2200 Victory Park Ave. at 6 p.m. Valet parking will be available. Everyone is invited, but an R.S.V.P. is requested at GLFD.org or by emailing Keith Nix.

Founded 11 years ago, GLFD bundles contributions to local organizations to promote equality and raise the visibility and awareness of the philanthropy of the LGBT community. GLFD’s beneficiaries are not LGBT organizations. They are non-gay focused and benefit the entire community.

Morning Edition on 90.1 KERA-fm often includes the announcement that the show is presented with a grant from the Gay and Lesbian Fund. Visitors to the Women’s Museum in Fair Park won’t see the word lesbian attached to any of the exhibits (which include lots of lesbians), but everyone starts the tour in the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Dallas Orientation Theater. Parkland Hospital, the Latino Cultural Center, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and more than a dozen other organizations have also been recipients. All told, GLFD has distributed more than $1 million.

People who contribute through GLFD can be confident that their money is not going to an organization that discriminates. GLFD investigates to make sure that all of the groups that benefit from its funds have non-discrimination policies in place in their hiring and employment practices based on sexual orientation.
