Survey shows majority of Vermont residents support gay marriage
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — More than 75 people rallied in Brattleboro in support of gay marriage, in response to a planned veto by Gov. Jim Douglas.
The gathering Sunday, March 29 was one of about six organized in recent days in response to Douglas’ announcement that he will veto a bill legalizing same-sex marriage if the Legislature passes it, the Brattleboro Reformer reported.
The Vermont Senate passed the bill last week and the House is expected to vote on it later this week.
Douglas has said he believes marriage should be the union of a man and woman and complained that lawmakers were being distracted by the issue.
At the rally, supporters said Douglas’ move has motivated them to work hard to get enough votes to override his veto.
An unscientific survey taken by state. Sen. William Doyle shows that 55 percent of Vermonters support gay marriage, 38 percent oppose it and 7 percent are undecided.
Results of the annual "Town Meeting Day" poll, which elicited about 12,000 responses, were released Monday, March 30 by Doyle, R-Washington.
