Not really sure how I missed this, but the OutMusic Awards which were scheduled for tonight (hump day? really?) aren’t happening — for now. OutMusic announced the awards will be postponed until Spring 2011 due to a sponsor abruptly pulling out of the ceremony. According to the letter on their website, proceeding with the awards would have been a strain on their budget. I’ve pasted the entire notice after the jump.

Unfortunately, this means we’ll have to wait on whether local musician Gary Floyd is a winner. We mentioned last month that he is up for three OutMusic awards.

I fail to see how this could have happened. The 2010 awards was to be the follow-up to an astounding success of a revival when the awards were brought back last year.  According to their site, “The 2009 OUTMUSIC Awards had a record breaking attendance of 2,000 attendees. Our OUTMUSIC Awards television media sponsor Logo TV of MTV Networks, helped the organization make history by airing the Best Moments of the 2009 OUTMUSIC Awards reaching 40 million viewers. We had a host of other media sponsors via online, radio, and live event producers across the nation, moving us one step closer to achieving Equality in the music industry and the world we live in!”

Talk about ramping up to a letdown. They aren’t revealing the sponsor’s name, but if you’re curious, you can check out the list of the 2010 OMA sponsors here and make your assumptions.

Dear Members,

The 2010 OUTMUSIC Awards, originally scheduled for December 1, 2010, has been postponed until the Spring of 2011.

For the past eleven months, the volunteer Board members and staff of the LGBT Academy of Recording Arts (LARA) have been working diligently to produce a spectacular 2010 OUTMusic Awards (OMAs) multi-day event while also launching our first national campaign, “The Sponsor A Young Person Initiative”. We took on these projects with the understanding that we would receive support from a major sponsor to underwrite many elements of the event. Due to unforeseen circumstances the sponsor reluctantly had to withdraw from the December event.

While the Board tried to do everything in its power to move forward with the December 1st event without a major sponsor, we concluded that the ceremony, while on track to sell out, would inevitably place the OUTMUSIC organization in jeopardy of taking on major and unnecessary debt.

Our decision to postpone provides us with the opportunity to pull together as a community and gives us additional time to raise the funds necessary to produce a flawlessly executed event and to raise much needed awareness and funds for the “Sponsor a Young Person Initiative”. We feel that our decision was a prudent and wise one, and already the community seems to agree. Even at this early juncture, several new community members and organizations have stepped forward in the past 48 hours and pledged their support. We will be moving forth with taking donations and encouraging artist to participate in the community programming to support the organizations registered under our initiative in the various cities across the country. Our youth need our love and attention and we will keep our commitment to push forth to be sure to be shine light on homeless young people in America.

We greatly appreciate the support of all who have already purchased tickets to the OMAs, and at this time we offer two options: 1.) We have authorized Ticketmaster to refund all ticket and service fees to ticket holders or 2) Ticket holders can retain their tickets and apply them to the upcoming spring event.

Again, we are very grateful for your support, for the time and the dedication of the 100% volunteer OUTMUSIC staff, and for our vendors and affiliates who have done their best to make this event and this organization a great success. Team OUTMUSIC is moving forward. We hope that the entire community will join with us in support of the Sponsor A Young Person Initiative and the Spring 2011 OUTMUSICAwards Ceremony.
