13-Norton-Headshot-copyJonathan Norton — the gay Dallas-based playwright whom we profiled here — has already won tons of attention for his play Mississippi Goddamn (including being one of my Queer Locals of 2015), but now comes a biggie: Norton is the recipient of the American Theatre Critics Associations Osborn Award for best new play. The award will be presented to Norton at the Humana Festival of New Plays in Louisville, Ky., on April 9.
The play, set in the house next to slain civil rights pioneer Medger Evers (and named after the famed Nina Simone protest song), debuted at the South Dallas Cultural Center in February 2015. Congrats, Jonathan!
