The American Family Association has sent a message to its supporters.
The group is afraid “don’t ask, don’t tell” will be attached to the Defense Authorization bill and is telling supporters to contact members of Congress:
The House Appropriations Committee will take up the Defense Appropriations bill this week. Latest reports indicate that there is still some indecision among the Democrats about attaching an amendment to this bill that will overturn the law that makes homosexuals ineligible for military service. The great news here is that we have an excellent chance to win this battle. Already, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Admiral Mike Mullen, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have urged Congress not to repeal this law until the military’s year-long study of the issue is complete. This, I believe, is in part due to your AFA’s Action Alerts that have gone to millions of patriotic Americans, calling for action.
This change of tone from the leaders of the military argues powerfully that they are beginning to hear from rank-and-file members of the military who know that allowing homosexual service members in our armed forces will decimate military morale, damage unit cohesion, inhibit rather than enhance military readiness, hamper recruitment and retention, and virtually bring to an end the military careers of Christian officers and chaplains. If the Democrats go ahead with plans to repeal existing law, they will be doing so in the face of opposition from military brass, members of the military, and the majority of the American people.
That “opposition from military brass” doesn’t include Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus, who testified before the Senate that gays and lesbians should be permitted to serve openly in the military. Or Secretary of the Army John McHugh, who asked gay and lesbian soldiers about their experiences and said he would not pursue discharge.
“Don’t ask, don’t tell” was instituted as part of a military appropriations bill and most strategists believe that is the best way to get rid of it.
