Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull introduced a bill to allow a non-binding vote on the issue. Parliament would then decide the issue. Voting in that election would be compulsory. Turnbull supports marriage equality.
The government would spend about Aus$15 million ($11 million U.S.) to publicize both sides of the argument.
But the LGBT community believes that giving a government voice to discrimination would legitimize homophobia and bigotry. Dean Smith, a gay senator, said he’d vote against holding the plebiscite.
Turnbull said the reason the LGBT community doesn’t want the election is because they believe they already have the votes in Parliament and don’t want the public giving Parliament the wrong answer.
