A number of pieces of original jewelry created by murdered artisan Robert Whiteside, along with several items from his collections of antiques and art, will be sold at auction on Nov. 19.
Whiteside was shot to death Oct. 31, 2006, during a robbery at the bed-and-breakfast he owned and lived in near Mount Vernon, Texas. The last of the three suspects in his murder was arrested this week in Cockrell Hill. One of the three pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison in July, and the third is set to be tried on capital murder charges in November.
Warren Butler, Whiteside’s partner, said he decided to sell the jewelry, art and antiques in part to pay of some debts and in part to help him begin putting the pain of the last two years behind him.
"I am hoping this jewelry and artwork will find homes with people who will appreciate and take care of them," Butler said in a written statement about the auction.
The auction will include several sets of animal-motif cufflinks and some diamond-and-rubelite earrings hand-carved by Whiteside. Among the antiques up for auction will be a pair of 19th Century French Empire bronze candelabra, each in the form of a patinated bronze maiden perched on a gilt sphere.
The live auction will be held from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19 at the Dallas Auction Gallery, 2235 Monitor St., with bids accepted in person, by telephone and online through E-bay Live Auctions.
The gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Nov. 14-19 for pre-auction viewing of all the items.
