1. Someone threw an unknown powder into the air at Station 4 early Sunday, causing police to block traffic on Reagan Street. An S4 employee reportedly called police after the substance burned his tongue. The employee was treated for a blister on his tongue, and police are testing the substance. And I’m not making this up.
2. Several people have commented on my post below about plans for a Prop 8 protest this past weekend outside a Mormon-owned bookstore on Preston Road. For the record, Dallas Voice never received any type of press release or announcement saying this event was taking place. The only way I found out about it was through a Facebook message that wasn’t even addressed to me. Had we known about the rally in advance, we would have considered covering it. However, given that it was a holiday weekend, we may not have made it anyway. As for commenter Brian Nesbitt’s claim that the mainstream media was “there in droves,” I haven’t seen a single report anywhere about the rally.
3. Speaking of protests, about 50 people picketed a Cinemark-owned movie theater in Boulder, Colo., on Sunday, according to The Daily Camera. Among them was Jared Polis, the first openly gay man elected to Congress as a non-incumbent. In case you missed it, some in the LGBT community are calling for a boycott of Plano-based Cinemark in response to CEO Alan Stock’s contribution to Yes on 8, the campaign to outlaw same-sex marriage in California.
4. Is gay the new black? This AP story is all over the mainstream media this morning.
We saw a video report on WFAA-TV (Channel 8) last night, although nothing has been posted to the Web site.
I was curious also about what happened on Saturday with the protest. I’ve searched online everywhere and this is the only mention of it in the media besides posts on myspace and facebook. I know Blake and I personally didn’t want to involved in this particular event but I totally support his passion for the cause and look forward to working with him on other projects.
I double checked my out box and just as I remember the Dallas Voice was the first media outlet I sent a press release to on Monday, November 24 at 3:58 pm. I sent it to editor@dallasvoice.com Do I need to send future release to a different address?
john,
i have to admit that i showed up to the protest late and the media had already left when i arrived (but at least i showed up). from what i’m hearing channel 5, channel 8 and univision were all there. while my choice of the word “droves” might have been a little extreme, how do you justify not covering an event that is important in our community? and i certainly don’t expect you personally to cover every event yourself but was there not so much as an intern available to cover this?
and for the record john, i stand by my comment in the other post. it still seemed like axe grinding instead of the award winning journalism we have come to expect from you. of course, now with this post you have a new target for your “reporting”.
Blake did send you a press release; moreover, you knew about the protest in advance as indicated by your previous post. I am confused by your claim that you did not know about the protest?
The mainstream press was at the protest; many of my friends called and said they saw the protest on TV.
If Blake sent a press release on Monday, I don’t know what happened to it. The address listed above is for Senior Editor Tammye Nash, and she says she never saw it. I found out about the rally from a Facebook message that I first read on Thursday morning, Nov. 27. At that point, it was too late to get a story about the rally in last week’s paper, which had already gone to press due to the holiday. It was also too late to plan any coverage, given that our offices were closed from Thursday through Sunday. Lastly, we don’t take our cues from the mainstream media, and just because someone decides to make a few signs and have a rally doesn’t mean we’re going to be there. Sorry.
i saw a report about it last night on the channel 5 news at 10pm
The good news is that the mainstream media covered this rally. The DallasVoice reporting on it is basically preaching to the choir and while I hope the gay community gets involved and riled up ala the 1980’s, the point of the protest was to get the message out to the uneducated masses regarding gay issues.
That said, I hope we read the followup in the next issue of the Voice. The gay community needs to know these events are taking place and get involved.
I suspect the resources of the Voice are limited, so timing is probably an important consideration by rally coordinators. Maybe give them a little more notice next time? This is no time to start eating our own when the battle has just begun.
(I am curious. Does the Voice have interns?)
You really know how to minimize something that was important to a lot of people, many people worked hard on this protest. We did not just make a few signs and decide to have a rally; your comment is arrogant and unappreciated!
I hate to burst this happy bubble but most people I know and the people we are targeting (energetic young LGBT’s) probably don’t watch the local news on a regular basis. So, if it’s not on the Net (and believe me I’ve looked everywhere, even youtube) then it basically didn’t happen. If anyone has video from the protest, put it up NOW while this discussion is still hot.
Kyle, I’m sorry you found my post arrogant as it was truly meant to be constructive criticism for future events and I did note the need for these events to be covered in the Dallas Voice. There are two sides to the story regarding the lack of Dallas Voice coverage. It appears it came down to a timing issue surrounded by a Holiday during the week. Reality bites.
I’m afraid you won’t appreciate this advice either, but followup ahead of time with the Voice. Get confirmation they recieved your information. If they refuse to cover future events, I’ll be bashing them right along with you. Know your true enemies.
J Paul,
Sorry I did not make it clear that message was a response to John Write who wrote:

How many people actually showed up to this protest anyway? And why a bookstore? Did they contribute to Prop 8- is that why?
haerd crossroads needs help packing mooving theyre store this weak. maybe this militant stuff cuold be used there??
“As the Voice Turns.” After we buy a well deserved crown for Wright as our editorial royality, an industrial sized bottle of Xanax, both as suggested by another blogger, we could host a blog watching happy hour. Carry on with the blessings of your subjects Wright. These attacks on you are not deemed credible but nonetheless amusing. Please post those answers if you find them Curious.
Peace out Wright.
I heard that a half of dozen people showed up.
that seems about right. i was thinking it was 7 or so…
