Question: So, just what do the Beatles and Dallas Voice have in common?
Answer: We both have had a cover designed for us by pop art icon Peter Max.
In conjunction with shows at two area art galleries in November 2011 — one at Wisby-Smith in the Crescent in Dallas and one at Milan Gallery in Fort Worth — Max asked a Dallas Voice writer during his interview if we’d like him to design that week’s cover for us. Fortunately, the interview took place a couple of weeks in advance of publication so there was time to create the cover and we jumped at the chance. It remains one of our favorite covers.
And for the Beatles, the artist designed the cover of the Yellow Submarine album.
Max, 88, passed away on Monday, Sept. 14 , in New York, his son announced. Cause of death was not revealed, but he had been suffering from dementia.
He became famous in the 1960s for his brightly colored, psychedelic designs that were widely reproduced on posters. But his art was seen on everything from a U.S. postage stamp to the exterior of a Continental Airlines 777.
