Make Cathey Miller's new art show part of your week.
You can breathe now. It is officially the weekend, so no more blaming the July 4 holiday for a janky week. It’s a big theater week, with openings in Dallas and Fort Worth. You might fit in some reading with Carsen Taite’s new book and head over to Oak Cliff for a new art show by lesbian artist Cathey Miller.
Although Cathy Rigby is still kicking it as Peter Pan, the real gem of the show could be Brent Barrett’s take on Captain Hook. The Broadway vet gave us reassurance that his Hook is on the scarier side. That’s easy to believe from Barrett who told us he just played Hannibal Lector. Yes, it was in a musical spoof, but still. Peter Pan opens Tuesday at the Music Hall at Fair Park.
Starting today in previews and officially opening tomorrow, Stage West premieres What the Butler Saw, an Oscar Wilde-esque British farce written by gay playwright Joe Orton. Dry wit and sexual innuendo abounds in this new production. And before you check out DTC’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat or Theatre 3’s Avenue Q, read our reviews on them first.
Local author Carsen Taite’s sixth novel, Slingshot, features lesbian bounty hunter Luca Bennett, who has her eyes on a missing man, but gets derailed by the sexy mysterious woman who appears. You can meet Taite when she makes an appearance Saturday at the Lincoln Park Barnes & Noble by NorthPark.
We can never get enough of artist Cathey Miller. Her work is bright and refreshing with jolts of color that depict everything from sexy femaliens to mustachioed chicks. She turns her eye to the ladies of music in Texas Lady Singers. Ladies who rock, folk and honkytonk all make appearances in her new exhibit which opens Thursday at The Kessler.
If you jaunt down to Austin, be sure to cheer on two teams from the Dallas Gay Basketball Association. The new league is gonna work to make an impression on its first outing at the the Texas Capitol Classic tournament this weekend.
