Below is Rick Perry’s latest ad from South Carolina, entitled “President of Honor,” which is apparently designed to pander appeal to the state’s large military population. We noticed that Perry appears several times during the ad in the same jacket he wore in his infamous anti-gay ad “Strong” — which, as we all know, is quite similar to the jacket Heath Ledger wore in Brokeback Mountain. It’s interesting that despite all the parodies featuring the jacket, Perry hasn’t abandoned the tan Carharrt. Maybe the governor and his campaign are just completely oblivious, as would be suggested by this tidbit out of South Carolina from Politico:
As if Rick Perry didn’t have enough problems.
The Texas governor was greeted at a restaurant in Anderson, S.C., by a young woman who posed for a photo with the Texas governor while saying it is “good to see someone as homophobic and racist as you.”
He smiled, took the photo and moved on.
“Maybe the governor and his campaign are just completely oblivious…” Yeah. Maybe. But it’s more likely he’s a complete idiot instead.
He doesn’t care that the jacket looks like the one in Brokeback Mountain. That style jacket is VERY POPULAR among conservative, rural outdoors-man type. Most of them won’t even get the reference. They’ll just notice that Rick’s wearing the same jacket they have.
This association is cute within the gay community but that’s about all.
My suspicion is that his campaign staff and advertising agencies know full well he hasn’t got a shot in hell of winning, but they continue to produce these formulaic stock footage ads just to drain all the money from his campaign coffers. They figure he’s an idiot, but an idiot with a lot of money, and they are correct.
I have to agree with David. I’m not fan of Rick Perry, but tan Carhartt jackets are probably the most worn jacket in rural communities. It’s kind of like North Face in urban settings, but Carhartts really are functional and made of pretty sturdy denim-like material, perfect for working outside. I promise you no one outside a town of 100,000+ will ever make the connection with the movie. Heath’s jacket in Brokback Mountain will never be the coverall equivalent as Jackie’s sunglasses.
Glen Maxey has already purchased one of the jackets and I think it would be great for lots of us to purchase them as well. Perry’s hateful ad made him a laughing stock and hurt his campaign. Perry is an empty suit and the rest of the country see that. He received 0.7% of the vote in New Hampshire. that is beyond embarrassing. Perry is beyond toast. He is already in the crumb tray!
Maybe these hero’s should watch the Sgt. York movie, and learn that these no honor politicians should have no linkage to the Medal Of Honor, or any other honor that they, themselves did not earn.
Only in TX would Rick Perry get elected dog catcher.
saying it is “good to see someone as homophobic and racist as you.”
I never knew people thougth of Perry as a racist? If it is strictly based off the ni**erhead rock at the ranch… that is pretty ridiculous. You shouldn’t throw the term ‘racist’ around so loosely.
I also don’t like Rick Perry, but the man is not a racist.
