As David mentioned Friday, Portland City Hall opened at midnight to accommodate same-sex couples who wanted to tie the knot as soon as the state’s new marriage equality law took effect. The first couple to marry in Portland were Steven Bridges and Michael Snell, above.

“We finally feel equal and happy to live in Maine,” Bridges told The Bangor Daily News.

“My heart’s pumping. Total butterflies in my stomach,” he said. “We couldn’t stop smiling the whole day.”
