Twelve protesters were arrested at the state Capitol early Saturday after the Senate approved an abortion bill that will make Texas’ regulations among the strictest in the nation, the Houston Chronicle reports. The protesters were arrested when they staged a sit-in in front of the Senate gallery as DPS troopers were trying to clear the building after the vote, according to the Austin American Statesman. Some of the arrested protesters reportedly sustained injuries requiring hospitalization. The Statesman also reports that several people were arrested earlier for chaining themselves to a railing in the Senate gallery. A DPS officer was seen running up the stairs to the gallery with giant bolt cutters. View more of the Statesman’s photos here. Watch video of DPS troopers breaking up the sit-in below.
