Earlier we mentioned that violent crime is down 29 percent so far this year in the area surrounding the Cedar Springs strip. But here’s a good reminder that you shouldn’t let your guard down: Those numbers don’t include a particularly violent attempted robbery that occurred late Monday near Throckmorton and Hall streets.
According to a police report, the victims were walking east, away from Cedar Springs, in the 3300 block of Throckmorton Street at about 11:30 p.m. when they passed the two suspects. One of the victims greeted the suspects by saying, “How are you doing?” The suspects didn’t respond, and after walking past the victims, they immediately turned around and confronted them. One of the suspects displayed a black, semi-automatic pistol, pointed it at one of the victims and said, “Give me your money, bitches!”
The suspect then hit the victim twice with the gun in the left side of his face. The victim managed to knock the pistol out of the suspect’s hand, and it fell into the street, where they continued to struggle over it. The suspect punched the victim several times, knocking him to the ground, and the second suspect picked up the pistol. The suspects then started to flee before one of them stopped and yelled to the other, “Let’s check his pockets.”
The suspect approached the victim, who was still on the ground, and attempted to check his pockets. But one of the other victims, fearing the suspect would shoot his friend, came over and began yelling at the suspects, who finally fled north on Hall Street.
Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse, a spokesman for the Dallas Police Department, said Wednesday morning there have been no arrests in the case, and no suspects have been identified. “Detective is still investigating it,” Janse said in an email.
If they would have police patrols on foot down there instead of driving down the block a few times in cruisers it would be a big help. I can’t even eat on the patio without someone homeless person or druggie asking me for money or cigarettes! It’s a shame when you can’t even enjoy your own neighborhood because of criminal activity and lack of police presence! If we were to start shooting them everytime we are approached I bet we’d get arrested! The Round Up Saloon has someone working their parking lot and I believe the CSMA has hired somone privately to keep an eye on the front on the same side as BULI Cafe but where are the police that our taxes pay for??? I guess we have to wait until someone gets killed and then they’ll show up for two weeks in full force then go on about their business until next time.
Lil’ Carl your right…I Live right there where it allegedly happend at the Casa Bonita Apartments here on N Hall St. and the police literally just drive through not even stopping. I work at the Krogers on Cedar Springs and walk home around 1:15 1:30ish in the morning from work and every night i worry about whos goin to show up behind me trying to rob me…i never know, but yes here there are alot of homeless people i’ve noticed lately but nothing is being done about it and the crime is starting to get really bad. Where are the police? Who knows they are probably at their doghnut shops waiting for them to open but hell we need protection for stuff like this i know damn well our paycheck taxes are being wasted because the cops arent being very useful.

Ok the papers may say violent crime is down but I don’t agree with the false reports. I think it may be fair to say that reported crimes are down. The police response in this neighborhood is pathetic ! On several occasions in the area i have called the police and by the time they respond the parties involved are gone. We do need on foot patrol.. A friend of mine was robbed of $ 847.00 dollars and when we called the police they showed up 45 minutes later . Everyone involved had already disappeared and when we tried to talk to the officer she was very rude and treated us with disrespect. My friend could not speak very good English and every time he tried to get closer to the officer to show her his ID ,,she would throw her hand up in his direction and yell at him to back off ..he was only trying to show her who he was.. I think the problem is you have officers in this area that don’t want to be in the community so they sit in there cars and pretend to be active. We only have a few GAY friendly officers in this area ….we should have more support or more tolerance from the officers if they are going to work a Gay neighborhood.
crime rises in any neighborhood when the criminals know that police apathy and response times are slow.
And when the criminals know that nine times out of ten the officers will not do anything about the crime…..
If the cops that patrol the area were really concerned about the safety of the clients there and not worried about people jaywalking, Public Intoxication or other miniscule things like that, then maybe the ones that are causing these crimes would then shy away from doing it…i wouldnt even be suprised if they inform the cops where they will be so that way the cops steer clear from the area while they are commiting these crimes…i have seen to many movies on crooked cops to make me believe otherwise. Granted there are good cops, but they have them in other areas other than where they need to be !
Fortunately for everyone on this thread, poor spelling and grammar is not a crime.
I just feel like the cops have gotten lazy. They don’t seem to care about catching real criminals. Just the easy ones that fill the city pockets. Its just turned into another way for the city to make money to pay the politicians.
I have to come to the defense of the Dallas Police Department. I see police presence everywhere in Oaklawn and they deserve a pat on the back for a job well done! My advice to people walking around the bar area, carry a whistle, pepper spray and be aware of your surroundings.
Ummm, has everyone not noticed the people hanging out in the Kroger parking lot and the corner gas station late at night? There are sometimes over a hundred of them… And they are really shady. I recently lived on Hall St. I’ve seen them doing all kinds of stuff like fighting, doing drugs in the open, screaming out profanity at others walking by, and more. I think if those police cars that cruise by would just hang out around there, and not even everyday, just randomly, it would be a lot safer. As a matter of fact, there is unreported crime around there and around the Illume. I know of someone that got chased into the Illume building by two African-American men who were trying to mug him.
@ sid…no offense but have you ever seen them out of their cars.. Also they spend too much damn time bothering the wrong people. We can’t count how many times the police have stopped us walking with arms loaded down with groceries …what criminal takes time to go shopping ? watch the right people and spend more time on foot patrol…. Have you actually talked with the officers ? There is an attitude and apathy problem here.
I live on Hall Street but I also work in the medical district which is the Harry Hines/Northwest Dallas area….you think it’s bad on cedar springs? In one month, someone tried to sell me prescription drugs, I saw people smoking crack and I witnessed a homeless guy being beaten who later died at the hospital. I know Cedar Springs appears pretty bad when you live in the suburbs but come on. The police have a lot more shit to deal with in other areas. Also, before moving the Cedar Springs, I live in northeast Dallas. It sounds like Iraq over there. So be glad it’s not any worse.
Ya, and you jokers wanted Kunkle in Office. Just saying.
