Last week, veterans from the Fargo area shared their experiences in the military with staff from the offices of Senator Dorgan and Senator Conrad. Wayne Danielson also wrote to the Fargo Forum:
I served in the Navy from 1986-90, and all the men in my family have been in the military. I enlisted and quickly progressed through the ranks. After deployments to the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf, where I served as an aviation storekeeper, I was offered a position on the admiral’s staff in Norfolk, Va. I turned down this opportunity because I no longer wanted to live a lie.
This was prior to “don’t ask, don’t tell,” but I decided that in order to live up to the values of honesty and integrity, I had to leave the 
military. I was the best in my field, yet I was forced to hide who I was in order to serve my country. It’s time for Congress to repeal “don’t ask, don’t tell” before we lose more qualified service members.”
