UT hires out gay man as associate athletics director

Drew Martin, who came out as a gay man in an interview with Outsports magazine in 2014 when he was associate athletics director at TCU in Fort Worth, has been hired at executive senior associate athletics director for external affairs by the University of Texas, Outsports reported this week.

It is “a powerful position in one of the highest-profile athletics departments in the country,” Outsports reporter Cyd Zeigler said in an article announcing his hiring. “It’s a reflection of Martin’s excellent track record in college sports, and a commitment to inclusion by Texas.”

Zeigler also noted that UT did not “shy away” from acknowledging that Martin is gay, pointing to the inclusion of a sentence in the hiring announcement that “Martin and his husband, Blake Macon, were married in Fort Worth in 2015.”
