A substitute private prom has been scheduled for Itawamba Agricultural High School. Constance McMillen, the 18-year old senior who is a lesbian and wanted to attend with her girlfriend, is not invited.
A hotel owner in New Orleans offered to hold an inclusive prom at his property and pay for the bus to transport the students, including McMillen.
Instead, the private prom will be held in a furniture store in Tupelo, Miss. Now how much more fun than a prom in New Orleans will this event in Tupelo be?
McMillen, represented by the ACLU, had sued the county school board to allow her to attend dressed in a tuxedo. As a result of the suit, the school board canceled the prom and asked that a private, discriminatory party be scheduled.
lesbian
Constance is a brave girl and those who ruined the prom for her entire school should be ashamed of themselves.
LGBT people will get equal rights, it is not a matter of IF but a matter of WHEN. So those who hold on to discrimination need to get over it and focus on using their energy for good.
That’s awful. I bet we see a lot more private (discriminatory) proms now.
Hopefully the tolerant students will boycott this… for everyone else, happy bigotfest!
What next? The right to bear arms at the prom?
No, Mike, the right to be yourself and celebrate graduation with the person that you love, without being degraded, excluded, harassed, subject to hate-speech, and generally treated as a second-class citizen.
And yes, I would say it is far more socially acceptable in most of America to take a concealed weapon to a public event than your LGBT partner. Which is really quite sad.
But there you go.
There are already places that have separate proms for LGBT students. Just like back in the ‘good old days’ when they did this in order to segregate by race. Or, are they STILL doing that too in places like this?
Whether objection to homosexuality is expressed as religious faith, or some other resistance to difference, like racism, it is, ironically, so fiercely felt because it is entirely the product of imagination. Religion (for example) is evidence to the fact that people are capable of believing anything at all. Being a fabrication means that any question threatens to dissolve the conviction into smoke–to expose it as a lie.
I was just being a smart ass. I think it is outrageous that someone has to hold a “private” prom for these kids to keep the school from being sued. She should wear what she wants, bring who she wants, and that’s that. At this point its the parents that cause the problems because the young kids today are trying hard to have no prejudices for the most part. Kids go in groups to the prom now, it’s not as important to have a date as it once was years ago. Women look great in tuxes too. It’s 2010 America and we’re supposed to be the best country in the world…bullshit.
This country is moving backwards instead of forward.
Do these people know how much this issue is being mocked in the world? Overseas (I am stationed in Germany) the news is having so much fun with this, or in case of the Islamic news turning this issue against us. The best comment I heart was from the RTL news asking if this section of the south remembered the North won.
Rather the doing something illegal, they cancel prom, Fail
Holding a private prom without her is legal, but they better be ready for the negative press
GOD MADE ADAM AND EVE
NOT ADAM AND STEVE.
i think its ridiculus. girls wear dresses not tuxes. she was only in it for the publicity.
Interesting argument about God not making Steve. So your religion teaches you that God only created some of us? And if you ever wear pants, you’re going to hell? Damn. Hope you’re in a dress right now.
Homosexual relationships are unnatural…period. Without any mention of religion, nature itself proves, through anatomy, that the relationship is unproductive. Example, if there were two islands with homosexuals on one and straight people on the other and the inhabitants were unable to leave, in 100 years, the homosexuals would all be dead whereas the “natural” relationships would produce offspring.
And if there were two proms and one was put together by only straight students and the other with the help of gay students, the prom with the gay students would be much more fabulous than the one without. So, Joseph, I’m not sure I get your point.
I dunno, Joseph. Could be that some or all of the straight people are infertile. And since they can’t possibly know which ones and in which combinations until they go for a pregnancy, and pre-marital sex, divorce, and adultery are all verboten, it could happen. Just sayin’.
I can see a number of problems with this “stick lots of people on an island and if they don’t reproduce they’re immoral” scenario.
The first is that assuming you put both male and female homosexuals on the same island, I’m sure that those of them who wanted children could come to some arrangement, probably involving a turkey baster.
The second is that if there were an island entirely composed of bisexuals, they would also produce offspring. So what does that mean? Is having a relationship with the same sex absolutely fine provided you’re also attracted to the opposite sex, then?
The third consists of a short list of groups who would also all die off if you placed them on an island together, and who are therefore unnatural: infertile people, elderly people (where all the women are past menopause), people who don’t want children, terminally ill people with less than 9 months to live, nuns, and the clergy of many religions.
… and I think that’s quite enough for one comment. Suffice it for now to say that the school district could not have shown their irrational bigotry any more clearly if they’d tried.
Personally, I feel as though all humans were created equally, and those who feel the need to broadcast their thoughts homosexuality is a sin are sinning just as much as any gay person, for God says to not judge thy neighbor. No sin is greater than another.
April, would that be the same God who then turned Adam and Eve’s two sons against each other by only telling one of them he’s not a vegetarian and then punishing the other one for not knowing it?
