Monica Loera

Organizers have announced that the rally and vigil honoring murdered trans woman Monica Loera will take place at Alamo Park, 2100 Alamo St. in Austin, at 7 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 12.
An opportunity to make posters for the rally takes place from 6-9 p.m. at the allgo offices, 701 Tillery St. in Austin on Wednesday, Feb. 11. Those interested in making posters are asked to contact Dukes at dukes@transtexas.org with any questions.
Loera was shot to death Jan. 22 outside her North Austin home by a man she had been arguing with, according to police reports. JonCasey William Rowell, 29, was arrested and charged with first degree murder in connection with her death.
Loera is the first transgender person murdered since the start of 2016.
News of Loera’s murder was not publicized in the LGBT community for several days because police and Austin media initially misgendered Loera, referring to her by her pre-transition name, and circulating a driver’s license photo of her also taken before she transitioned.
An e-mail sent by the Transgender Education Network of Texas asks participants to “come out and join us to lift up her spirit and to raise awareness to the multi-faceted disparities the community faces and the immense violence perpetuated by it.”
