And I only found out because of Twitter.
According to this, every May 17 is the International Day Against Homophobia or, and I kid you not, IDAHO for short. Thanks to the reappearing hashtags, #IDAHO, #homophobia and #homofobia, which Ricky Martin used in his tweet, I decided to give it a look-see. Now I’m kinda red-faced I didn’t even know this existed. The day is initiated by the Canadian organization, Fondation Émergence.
This year’s campaign is centered on Homophobia in the Sports World. Here is one of the tidbits on that page.
Hitting the Locker Room
In the sports world, hitting the locker room is the norm and the first time people become aware of sexuality-related taboos. Gay men and lesbians are often traumatised by such an exposing experience whereas other people learn their first lessons in how to taunt and be homophobic.
Happy Holidays!
We should also have United Day Against Homophobia. That way we’d have IDAHO and UDAHO! 🙂 Happy Holidays!
This was all over the place here in Mexico City, FB messages by GLBT people and groups. Even the Mexico City government participated in activities. So are you say that Dallas is not such an International City after all? 🙁
@Jesus, it’s not a matter of Dallas being an International city, but perhaps that the event was only International in name. I have friends all over the US(mostly Dallas, NYC, DC,Chicago and Houston) and the UK, this was not a subject on any of their FB status updates.
My guess is, that the Montreal based group targeted a few cities due to funds.
Oh my! I missed it! Perhaps next year we should rent planes with banners….yes, big, big banners and Krystal Summers and George Rekers can do a TV promo! The RentBoy.com guy and help!
