Shirley Huntley, the Queens, NY, Democrat who opposes marriage equality, is fighting to keep her seat in the midst of a primary challenge from pro-equality Lynn Nunes. So what does she do? Well, without providing any proof of the connection, she intimates that gay rights activists are sending her death threats, natch:

State Sen. Shirley Huntley Mailer Links Death Threats To Gay Marriage Supporters [NY Daily News]

Could it be a gay activist that sent the flowers? Perhaps. But it could also be a disgruntled former employee of her maintenance company Huntley Enterprises. It could be a constituent disgruntled with her health care views. It might be a supporter using the victim strategy that is so popular with those who vote against equality. Hell, it could be a local delivery man who misdirected someone’s floral parting gift! The point is that we do not know, and neither does Sen. Huntley.

As a gay New Yorker myself, I can tell you that silly political stunts are nowhere on my radar. Preserving equality is. Last December, the senator from Southeast Queens joined seven other Democrats in voting against my marriage. No, that action does not deserve a funeral bouquet. But it also doesn’t deserve a vote, IMHO.
