A few weeks ago I noted that bigoted, hate-mongering Dallas Morning News op-ed columnist Rod Dreher is leaving the newspaper at the end of the year. But you had to know Dreher wouldn’t go quietly. In fact, ever since I found out Dreher was leaving, I’ve been bracing myself as I open The DMN’s Sunday Points section, knowing there would be a few more hateful, hurtful, harmful attacks on LGBT citizens. Today one of them came, and this time, Dreher takes on the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, an organization that seeks to protect the most vulnerable in our community, LGBT youth. I’ll spare you the details of Dreher’s column, which can be summarized by saying that he accuses GLSEN of “sexualizing” schoolchidren. (Gee, how fucking original!) But I do want to address one tactic that Dreher and other anti-gay bigots frequently use. Toward the end of the column Dreher acknowledges that he’ll be called a bigot for his views, and suggests that if that’s the case, he’ll wear it as a “badge of honor.” In other words, he’s the bully playing the victim. But instead of feeding this tactic by continuing to refer to Dreher as a bigot, I’m gonna start calling him something else. As some of you may know, the suicide rate among LGBT youth is three times as high as the suicide rate among straight youth, and it’s time to stop pulling punches. From now on, I’m referring to not only bigots like Dreher, but also newspapers that give them a forum for their hate speech, as ACCESSORIES TO MURDER. Try that badge on for size, you unenlightened prick.
Hmmm. I have no clue who this guy is. If more people are like me…the better. Let’s keep him insignificant and unnoticed.

Glad you aren’t mincing your words! We have been letting the DMN slide for way too long. It’s time they started being called out for their hate speech. This guy isn’t the only columnist form the News that is a bigot.
Rod Dreher simply does not care that he is causing DIRECT harm and damage to innocent people’s lives. He doesn’t care because Rod Dreher believes that those lives are worthless anyway.
I know that he has very young sons, and I truly feel sorry for them. For surely they will live to see a day when their father’s history of bigotry is understood by them. He has and is letting his children down, in the long run. But his bigotry blinds him to this.
And don’t sons always pay for the sins of their fathers?

Dreher is only a victim of his on self indulgence. A non entity that spews shit every time he opens his bearded mouth. NO, this media whore will not go away without sentencing a few more gays to death. D Magazine defends this man to his core. D Magazine is the biggest cheerleader for defending these fucked up individuals. Why does anyone in the gay community buy the DMN or D Magazine? Why? What in the hell have they ever done for us?
He is going to milk his departure for eternity and will probably change religions two or three times in the process. I pity his children. I don’t pity his wife, she must be as twisted as him to stay with him.

Maybe it’s time for us queers to find new methods to fuck with these kinda people right where it matters… If you’re married, then you pay 50% more. If you don’t like it, then talk to the people you elected to change it or fuck off…

Thanks so much for writing about this, John. After I saw the op-ed in the early edition on Saturday — couldn’t bear to read it through — I saw online comments relating to this and other recent sputterings of various so-called conservatives. All of the comments made the same points.
For whatever reason, these sick f***s are fixated on the rights of adolescents to contraception, of women to abortion, and of LGBT people to even exist.
How sexually sick is that?!.

I have rarely seen a nastier display of hatred and prejudice than this blog post and the comments following it. And you’re calling out Rod Dreher as a hater? Wow. Unbelievable.
Apart from the deliberate damage he’s done to our youth in his futile, self-loathing attempts to drive out the demon he hates that gnaws at him still within his own obviously conflicted sexuality…there’s a reason he reads this blog and links to it today…when Rod Dreher leaves here in a few days he’ll finally be gone and it will be as if he was never here to begin with.
No one except those few like himself ever mistook his painfully confused internal psychodramas for intellect or its fruits, only for what they were, the lashings out of a sexually conflicted and permanently arrested frightened young boy from the country who was lucky enough to hit his professional stride when blogging leveled the paying field for anyone who could construct a sentence.
And so because little of what he ever said had much connection to the real lives of most real people to begin with, straight or gay, or if it did, was as obvious and mundane as a back yard garden plot, there’ll be nothing for it take hold of, and so it will all just blow away, leaves in the wind, crumbling to dust, gone and forgotten.

The Drehers of this world are not going away, and not because they are entrenched in bigotry. They are not going away because of posts like this one which exhibit far more bigotry and hatred than anything Dreher has ever written, said, or probably thought. The Drehers of this world do not hate you, they are not locked in a prison of fear and calcified beliefs, they are concerned citizens who wonder why kids (like theirs) should read explicitly sexual material, some of which contains illegal sexual acts.
They wonder –waiting for reply — what, if any, sexual acts should be considered “perverse”. They receive no answer, just venomous bigoted “spewing” (to borrow a word from this thread).
There is opportunity for dialog here. But posts (and responses) like these do far more to solidify the barriers between the GLBT and the “others” of this world than the sane and sober-minded articles the Drehers of the world write.
If you want to stay in your own hate-filled bubble, fine. But you’re only shooting yourself in the foot.
It’s almost like you were the organ grinder, John, and Rod Dreher was your little trained monkey dancing to your tune.
No sooner than you call him out for being the passive-aggressive coward he is, trying to pass off his bigotry as victimhood, than here he comes siccing his disciples on you to defend himself from the painful truth. Poor widdle monkey that needs some middle-aged frump, who’s probably given him her life savings in order to give her life some twisted meaning, to do for him what he’s way too chickenshit to do for himself. That’s the way it is with bigots, squealing little cowards to the core hiding behind others every one of them.
As a regular reader of Dreher’s blog who usually disagrees with his take on gay and lesbian issues, I’ve got to say I’m pretty confused by the viciousness of your post, John Wright. Sure, he’s not a perfect guy, but the kind of immaturity and hatred spewed by this post and by most of the comments on it is simply mind-blowing.
It’s one thing to oppose homophobia and its sometimes deadly consequences, but it’s another thing entirely to irrationally lash out at anyone with whom you disagree in the slightest, slandering people without so much as a reasoned argument. Please live up to your capacity as a human being and at least present a decent argument next time. Until then, I’ll have to presume that Dreher has the truth on his side, however disinclined I am to do so.
Well said Steve. Dreher may be wrong on this and other issues, but you wouldn’t know it from reading the rants here. There are no counterpoints being made; only a lot of name calling and nastiness.
