Two Cowboy restaurants — Chow and Diner —make big gambles

Cowboy Chow in Deep Ellum is taking an interesting gamble — literally. Customers can go "double or nothing" on their appetizer: Flip a coin or do a high card/low card draw, and if you win, the appetizer’s free; if you lose, it costs double. The question is: Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?
The similarly-named-but-quite-different Cowtown Diner in Fort Worth has its own daring bet going on. You can get your meal free if you clean your plate… though it’s not that simple.
Your "meal" is the 64 oz. chicken-fried steak platter — four pounds of deep-fried beef covered in gravy and accompanied by six pounds of mashed potatoes and half a loaf of Texas toast. Proprietor Scott Jones reports that in the last week, six orders have been placed — and none have finished it. Fully loaded it’s $70 … and 10,000 calories, but free if you finish.
You can enjoy much lighter bites at Tei-An in One Arts Plaza, which has opened its rooftop lounge, serving small plates and cocktails — perfect now that the weather has turned nice.
The Place at Perry’s, which has long anchored a corner along Cedar Springs in Uptown, will host a tasting of Macallan scotch on April 21 at 6:30 p.m. For $25, you can sample three of The Macallan potables: 12-, 15- and 18-year. And you can indulge in the 25 year for half-price in the bar after the tasting. Hors d’oeuvres will also be served.
