LGBT Latinos will get some television face time tomorrow morning. SuperLatina host Gabriela Natale e-mailed to remind that her episode, “Latino and Gay: Stories from a Minority within a Minority,” airs tomorrow at 8 a.m. on Telemundo 39. She does a lot more than talk to youth as mentioned in my previous post about this. She broke down how tomorrow’s show will play out:
“I wanted to give you a heads up regarding a TV special that might be of your interest. The show will feature segments of interest including:
- The Struggles and Dreams of the New Generation of Gay Latinos: teens from Youth First Texas Teens share what it is like to come out of the closet in the 21st century. The stories include a teen that came out of the closet when he was only eleven years old, a student who was abandoned in a hospital by his mother when she learned that he was gay and freshman in college that remembers the years of harassment from teachers and students he had to endure in high school, among others.
- Preventing Teen Suicide: Valiente President Fernie Sanchez explains why gay teens have four times more risk of committing suicide.
- Parents Advice: Counselor Zoriceli Davila has tips on what to do if you son or daughter comes out of the closet.
- Accountant by Day and Drag Queen by Night: Kaliente personality Nikki Lauren shares step by step the transformation.”
Now that sounds like a show. And just in time to overlap Pride with Hispanic Heritage Month. Local LGBT and Latino activist Jesse Garcia considers Natale as an ally to the community. “Gaby is using her TV platform to tell our story. I think it would be great for the DFW LGBT community to know about her, her empowerment message to women and her love for the LGBT community,” he said via e-mail.
SuperLatina is also nominated for a Lone Star Emmy which will be announced October 17.
