Metroplex group hits the lanes on Friday nights

Here’s an SAT verbal comparison: Football is to Texas as gay bowling is to Dallas.

If you’ve hit the lanes at USA Bowl on any night of the week, you’re liable to run into a mega-church turnout of queer leaguers. USA Bowl is where the Dallas leagues meet Oak Lawn Bowling Association, the TNL Ladies League, the Cedar Springs Fun Bunch Doubles League and the LAMBDA Mixed League.

Well, another GLBT group of ten-pin players is ready to roll: Friday Night Out bowling league. But this Metroplex league meets in Plano.

According to president Lewis D. King, Friday Night Out has been in existence for about four years. The membership is on the small side, which could be enticing, because at USA Bowl, sometimes the turnouts are so large that every lane is taken.

King, a hairstylist, joined Friday Night two years ago that’s when one of his lesbian clients tried fixing him up with another bowler. The match wasn’t perfect, but the activity was a refreshing change from tavern hopping.
Bowling also brought back fond memories. Growing up in England, King remembered the fun times he spent at the local alley when his parents had joined a league. Since King joined two years ago, his scores have improved.

“My average was in the low 80s when I started. Now I’m hitting the upper 120s,” he says.
